let me start out by saying this project is not finished, but i am hoping to be done either this weekend or next... depending on my hangover schedule. so i will post pics as soon as i am done. but here's what we got so far.

BMW OEM and Aftermarket equipment
- BMW business radio (in dash cd player but i just ordered the MD or Mini Disc business radio from Australia. i have way to many of those to be wasting. i have been using that technology for 12 yrs now.)
- BMW Bluetooth phone kit
- Phatbox
- BMW Sirius Satellite Radio
- Aux (for the puter of course!)

The Carputer! 1.1 tera!! (the fun part)
- 2.4ghz
- 512 megs of ram
- two 400gig hitachi HD's (and are actually surprsingly fast)
- also have a 360 gig western digital firewire drive (used to gon in and out of the house)
- 4x dvd +- r/rw
- Xenarc 7" 700TSV
- Satellite radio antenna (for xm)
- GPS Mouse (using Street Atlas 2004 Plus, has every phone number in the book very handy for making reservations)
- over 52,000 mp3's (yep! 52,000 i think that's every cd, of every friend i've ever known as well as mine and their downloads)
- a little over 500 ripped dvd's (most ripped to divx but my favs were ripped with dvdshrink so they will fit on one single layer dvd. still takes up about 4gig of space per movie but if a friend wants a copy i can burn it for them in about 10 mins)
- about 2000 music video's (why just listen whe you can watch!!!)
- close to 10,000 video games (emuing nes, snes, n64, atari, sega master system, sega genisis, neo geo, ti 99/4a, intellivision... you get the idea)

that's everything i have done. i am installing the following this weekend. (or next)

- obd-II
- I-bus controller
- Viewsonic 15" airpanel (now this is freakin cool!!! i have one of these at my house that i have been using as a remote. it's touchscreen. and it works via 802.11b. i got it for my home so if someone needed to go to the bathroom they could and still watch television so we don't have to pause the game. this makes everyone happy even the guy whose got to go! so i figured why spend double the money for screens in the headrests when someone can hold the screen in there hands as well as controller the pc. lets face it the car is too small for more than one person to fit in the backseat anyway. or at least for texan's its too small.)
- reverse camera
- watching satellite tv over vpn (this one won't work till july! for most unless you are in San Diego or Washington DC currently work there) i have been doing this for years now at work, so i figured why not the car too. i tried this with my mustang about 4 years ago with a richochet modem but the 144kps was a little choppy. thank god for EV-DO. Verizon will be launching there high speed wireless network in Dallas, july 1st. i bet you are wondering how this might work. if you have a cable modem at home, this will never work for you. or at least where i live fastest upload of cable here is 128kps. some of you are prob thinking that's way more then enough to upload streaming video (80kps would normally work) but in order to change channels you need to VPN to control a piece of software in order to change them. so if you have a dsl with 384kps or T1 or bigger, you're golden! i do this with directv. you need an older receiver with the serial data port on the back and this software, directv control run the video to a computer, and if you have a video in, like ATI all in wonder or something, then set up the vpn software and you are done.
- other then that i'm just writing software to make life easier. like push one button recording to mp3, just incase you like a song on the radio. stuff like that. and a few other things up my sleeve! keep watching!

as for how it's set up in the car. the xenarc screen is where the nav comes stock in a bimmer but instead of putting the HVAC right below the screen i put the radio and the mounted the HVAC where the cupholders normally go. i did this so i could one still put a cd in the deck, two beable to view who is calling via bluetooth and finally so i could switch modes. the computer is in the glove compartment. for a better idea check this thread:

What do you use to broadcast the TV over the VPN? Channel control doesn't convern me too much but I'd like to be able to broadcast TV to a PC over my home network.

Cool idea, but what are you talking about with a VPN? Seriously, the way the internet works is..you have the server at your house with a port open for control that your carputer can connect to, and switch channels through there. You definitely don't need a VPN. If you need something to prove this to you, check out this (http://www.dtvcontrol.com/) Directv receiver control utility that has a built in webserver that allows you to change the channel. Also, how fast is EV-DO supposed to be? Because if you want respectable video, you're talking like at least 512 down, most likely more.

(i'm still using 1.2)i also failed to mention that have dish network, and bell expressvu connected as well and i use another prog to switch the video source.(i personally will still need VPN) but thx for the update on dtvcontrol. as for speed i have had flawless video with a connection as low as 256kps average. EV-DO "evolution data optimized" on verizon will average 512 to 768 up/dn. and will burst upto 2mps by this time next year.

years ago when i had a ricochet modem i had a connection speed of 144kps and yes the video then was choppy, but i also got to beta test a 400kps system that never made it out do to bankruptsy, and the video was flawless.

EV-DO or as Verizon calls it "Broadband Access" will be enough juice to handle this.

You might want to stick with the VPN solution or AT LEAST some form of security. If you hang your Dish or DirecTV reciever on the internet (via a web server or otherwise) you may end up with unexpectedly large Pay-Per-View bill.

Dude you are a one-man driving Napster! You could offer a delivery service for people who dont have broadband! Just drive round residential areas with a couple of wireless cards running and let eveyone download and upload!

i will definitely stick with vpn... at one time i had my directv uploading to my website. i wasn't at the time able to change the channels but i didn't care i just wanted to watch Fox News during class. but my buddies would call up my roomates and have them change the channel to ther liking...which was always porn. kinda funny but got old real fast so i changed to a VPN and my probs were solved. i could change the channel and no one else could. not saying me but most people aren't worried about the cost of PPV's. if they are into that.

i'm not running video through my house. i have a receiver plugged into the video in of my video card. and a serial cable running to my reciever so it can change the channels for me. on this pc i am running VNC server and i use VNC to log in to control that computer. i then open an ati prog that watches the line in, and also open dtvcontrol so i can change the channels. since i don't trust my friends i feel this is the safest route. hope that helps if not i'll try to help you out more.

sorry i just won't do that... although i personally don't have a problem with burning the music videos for you, since they are easily recordable from any music channel, somehow i find myself not wanting to get into anymore trouble than i already have in my life. i will via pm point you in the right direction. of certain #irc channels and websites. i doubt that i listen to the same genre as you anyway. you can always just use Kazaa and search for the video.

i back everything up via dvd burner but instead of burning by the alphabet i do it by date. makes backing up a lot less of a headache. just have a list of the last date i backed up and anything changed after that date gets burned.

yea i got it from classic. they are the only Dinan dealership i know of around here i bet there are more but i know John Roberts isn't one. which for me would be a nice shot via the tollway & 635. i live in west plano... no i'm not an IT guy just into computers. i'm into Commerical & industrial Real Estate.

for those keeping track i installed a stealth one this weekend which might quite possibly be the biggest waste of money ever. as well as a k40 laser defuser plus. by the way the K40 works like a charm, tested it about four times here in plano. with each pass you could definitely see the officers frustration. it was fun. especially on the last lap when i was purposely doing 48 in a 40 and his laser no workie and i'm not going to say i installed one of these,cuz i didn't, but do check it out. i heard they work...
