My Carputer Project - 04 Honda Civic Type R

I've finally managed to make a start on the installation a computer into my 04 CTR after a fair few months of planning the idea. Its not completely finished yet since there are many bits to iron out. Took a couple of pictures to let you see what it looks like.

I have a Lilliput 7" Colour LCD Touchscreen which is fixed underneath the gearstick. Its adjustable and removeable for that added security. The power for the screen is hard wired to the cigarette lighter along with my snooper speed detector.

There is a small HP in the boot which I bought on Ebay for £150 (1GHz Processor, 256MB, 20GB Hard Drive) and it is linked up to the screen in the front. The screen is attached to the boot with a few strips of velcro hook. However this computer won't be in there much longer as I'm replacing it with a laptop and to avoid the use of an inverter.

I installed MediaEngine to control MP3s, Movies, Sat Nav, DVDs etc. Need to do some customisation of the skins.

I don't have a wireless keyboard as of yet but there im using a popup touchscreen keyboard for the input of text.

The camera I have is crap at taking decent shots of the screen so appologies for the quality since it looks so dull on the pics. I bought an AUX interface cable from a company in the UK for running the sound from the computer to the CTRs headunit. The headunit just acts like an amplifer and makes life easier for controlling the sound. I could have bought an amplifier but that would mean that I'd have to upgrade all the speakers. I will probably do this in time.

The Sat Nav is linked up to a Haircom GPS Receiver on the dashboard which runs to the computer in the boot.

I use Navigator by InfoMap for running the Sat Nav. I've found it to be a good useful app.

Here is a better shot of the bracket which the screen is fitted onto. I basically modified the bracket which came with the Lilliput screen and used two small screws to afix it to the dash. It can be tilted and easily removed using a plastic lock behind the screen. The fixing of the bracket was a one of the hardest decisions to make since I did not want to be putting in any holes, especially for resale. However I managed to source some grey textured tacks to fill in the holes and you wouldn't be able to tell they existed. Anyways, if I do sell the car then I'll more than likely sell the computer with the car.

Finally I now have the Nokia Hands Free kit installed which amplifies the speech through the cars speakers and mutes the sound if someone calls. I've been mega lost without this piece of kit since changing cars.

And finally a picture of my car.

Other things planned soon:
* Wireless network connection
* Web Cam for the rear window for both surveillance and as a reverse parking aid
* Voice recognition to select MP3s
* GPS Speed Camera Software
* Wireless Keyboard

Nice - car looks good in black too
I noticed you have a blank din-ish slot under the stereo - did you not want move the stereo down there and put the Lili where the radio is...? Just a thought!

Keep up the good work!

would suggest destinator as your GPS software, there is an addon on this site that has a UK speed camera database in it.

Thanks Spaghetti. Yeh, it is definitely feasible, infact I may end up taking out the stereo altogether and mounting the Lili in there as there is enough space. Will need to add an amp plus new speakers. I just wanted the system installed cos I couldn't wait to use it

Cheers Enforcer, I'll have a look since I'm really interested in getting the speed camera database. Where's the best place to buy Destinator and/or download?

Have just installed a Ground Loop Isolator and can't believe how good a difference it has made to the sound

actually, you can fit both a fold out LCD din dish and third part stero in that double DIN...but it is tight. I have a honda civic and just did it last week:

That looks wicked Kandyman Is it a touchscreen?

The gound loop isolator I bought was from Maplins Electronics for about £7.99.

Nice install, that lilliput looks to be a little low though. Possibly a hazard.

I find it a fairly good position to control. Ideally I'm going to put it into the dash but for now it doesn't get in the way at all.

Nice. Might have to look into a one of these

I'm finding it quite hard to see my screen during daylight. I can see it but could do without the glare. I saw someone on the board using some kind of antiprotective film to reduce it?

your already off to a good start. you can convert your lilliput into an indash unit, if you have the soldering skills needed. If not send it to digitalww.com and they'll do it for 60 bucks. The in-dash housing is 90 bucks. enjoy.

Cheers for the link, im going to have a good look into this as I think it would be much better for vision to have it in dash! I would have done this originally but I did not quite fancy making a mess out of the dash when I had only just bought the car.

No way! I am using that same PC. HP e-pc 42! Did you end up using an Inverter or did you get the 12V and 19V that it needs to run?
