91 honda accord install

Heres a few pics of my install in my 91 Honda Accord lx. Right now it is still pretty ghetto, ive got a long way to go before everything is how i want it. heres a picture of the car its goin in...

i bought a 1.8 ghz intel pentium 4 ASUS barebones computer online. It has 256 mb of ram, a 120 gb harddrive, and a dvdrom. I decided to mount it in the trunk along with my inverter. ill be getting an opus sooner or later when i get some more cash.

heres a picture of the screen through the window

some pictures of the console. I have the inverter connected directly to the battery, and when i flip the switch the inverter gets power to turn on the computer and screen. i also installed an led next to it to tell me if the computers power is on.

The screen......

I mounted the screen on the stock stand with some velcro. works well because i can take it out and put it in my glovebox when i leave my car someplace it could get stolen.

Lastly, the glovebox with my video inputs

looks pretty good to me. There was a guy a while back with a car computer in a bashed up wooden crate... that gets the 'gheto' award.

ps: except the cofee can exhaust.

Man... I can hear it from here... "STEAL ME!!!" Good job making it removable, though... Don't forget to take it off the dash when you park... Busted windows != fun

Ahhhh the asus pundit

good choice! You may want to mount it vertically to save wear on your hard disk. Once i take some pictures of my setup I'll post them up. I have a Pundit box mounted to my sub box. It is spaced a few inches away and also has foam around the mounting brackets for shock resistance.

I know this is (sort of) old post, but thanks for posting this! I'm thinking about getting a 4th gen accord pretty soon, and I'm trying to plan out my carputer setup. But I didn't know the details of the interior of the car, so I had no clue where to place the monitor. I really like your idea (making it removable), so if u don't mind I'm gonna copy it, because I need to have a HU (so can't mount it in HU location), not easily visable by thieves - thats my main concern (if it's removable then it's not visable at all

), and I don't know how to fiberglass (so no custom dash stuff). So thanks again!

One question for you tho - how is the glare in that location? I plan to tint my windows (5% all around (except windshield of course) most likely), so I know that will reduce glare quite a bit, but how bad is it in that location?

im tinted at 35% on the sides and back and nothing on the windshield, and there is no difference usually between the windows down and up. I think that most of the sunlight comes in from the windshield, but im not positive.

Glare pretty much sucks, but i can always read the song that is playing clearly. theres really no good spot on the dash to put it without glare. I think depending on what kind of skin you are using you should be alright.

definitely make sure to take down the lcd when you park and consider ditching the car

LOL! What a brilliant alternative - if your carputer doesn't fit your current car, just get a new one that fits the carputer!

actually, you *NEED* to mount it vertically. once good hard bump on the harddisk from a speed bump or pothole can take out a partion, some data, or the whole drive. I learned my lesson the hard way and always mount the harddrive on its side.

as always, make sure you have backups of your data, esp with that large of a drive.

When your read head motors go from being thrown arround (by putting them in the plane that the car gets jerked arround much), you won't just loose some data, you'll with certainty loose the whole drive.

This is an age old debate.

yes, very much aware of the age old debate:-)

My point is that you may *not* loose the whole drive. I had the "wonderful" experience of having a 20GB harddrive loose all of its data in one deep pothole bump when it was laying flat and very coushined back in 2001. The drive survived though, but I had to reformat the drive since the paration table and data on it was f-ed.

i learned to mount it on its side back then:

laptop harddrives are a completely different story; they are made to take some medium abuse.

I'm not completely understand on how to mount the HD? I'm currently mounted it == as that's the only way it will fit in my glovebox...

But with the glovebox closed, it should be more of a // position. You're telling me I should mount it || ?

correct, it should be mounted || .... you may still loose some data in a bump (i didn't though over the roughest PA roads), but not greatly decreases the chances of killing the drive if it was laying == when the head hits the platter hard.

if you can, try to avoid the // position. cause then you have the worst of both mounts. if it hits a bump, it would be just as likely or worse to have the harddrive head hit the platter hard.
