'87 audi 80 CarPC

The install has been removed from the car and has been transfered, to here.

In '99 I bought myself an '87 Audi 80 from an old couple my parents knew.
Being a student at that time, I was looking for a rather cheap car.
The car was rather old, but still looking very good. It had only 88.000km (+/- 55.000 miles).
The couple had bought this car brand new and had owned it for 12 years.
All this made me decide to buy the car.

For over 4 years I had driven the car with the '87 orginal stock HU. I really got sick of it! I started searching for a new HU but stumbled on this site...
After a lot of reading I decided to give it a try myself.

The result :

- Via Epia M10000
- 256MB RAM
- 40GB HD
- PW70A + ITPS
- Matrix Orbital MX2 (char LCD)

The pics aren't always that good and I still need to tidy it up a bit.

Good one! I also wanted to get one of those serial LCDs but they appear to be quite expensive and my carputer already has its serial port occupied by an IR receiver

Well they are quite expensive indeed, but there is a USB version as wel. I myself have the USB. Works nice, it creates a virtual com-port. So the programming will not be different for the USB version.

Maybe in the future I'm going to use GPO's of the display to control some neons or leds or something. Don't know yet.

That RCA does quite a good job, certainly worth the money spend on that little wire

I already have the Xenarc 700TSV.
I tested it few days ago, and boy do i love it
Wiring for the LCD is already in place and tucked away properly. Just have to mount it.

But i'm still thinking on how to build some kind of bracket. It must have quick release for the LCD, must be sturdy and as stealth as possible. Because, to be honest, besides a lock, there is no hightech antitheft mechanism on a '87 Audi 80.
Maybe some of you got an idea?

Does the Matrix Orbital need just the USB cable? Or does it need a separate power cable run?

The display itself only needs the USB, so no external power needed.
But if you want to use the General Purpose Outputs - which can be used to control fans, leds and other devices - in most cases you will need an external power source. USB can only handle about 500mA.

I know somewhere on mp3car there is someone who took an ordinary notepad, the old kind that you use a pen on, and put some hooks on the back. Then when they left the car, they just hooked it over the screen and it looks like there is just the notepad rather than a nice lcd screen. I tried to find the thread with no avail.

I know which one you mean. I have seen it as well.
But this setup has been "demolished" and rebuilt in my VW Passat.

I am thinking of molding my screen in my dash with my new install.
Because it looks cleaner and if done properly, it doesn't draw any attention.
At the moment I am still looking at what is the best way to do this.
