The Installation : The completed PC is positioned under the front passenger seat with a 12v power tap taken from the aux power point in the rear of the centre console. Other wiring is passed via the centre console or the nearside sill and door frame.

The satellite receiver is positioned in the nearside corner of the dashboard.

And the Wi-Fi card in front of the rearview mirror.

Initially the touch screen was mounted on the dashboard on a mounting that consisted of a special Focus bracket and part of the fitting from the small stand that was supplied with the touchscreen

In the next photo’s you will see that the touchscreen was made detachable for security reasons. This was OK but became a bind when it had to be removed each time I parked, and so facia mounting was a future option I was seriously considering

After a few months using this install I decided to take the plunge and try a facia mount. For this I needed to buy a 2nd facia panel which I could adapt to take the touchscreen, leaving the original one intact to replace if I came to sell the car.
Because of size limitations it became clear that I needed to remove the touchscreen casing and mount the screen and electronics directly into the facia. The next few photo’s show the progress of that project.

A plastic moulding to take the screen and electronics was made for me by a friend. The facia panel needed a bit of dremeling on the lower edge to accommodate the depth of the moulding which in turn was the depth of the screen.

Plastic ties are not just for retaining wheel trims !

A control panel with push buttons needed to be built into the plastic moulding because the original was part of the case.
And some photo’s of the screen in use.

A cover for the screen
An infrared reversing camera
The camera is linked to the electrics of the reversing system so that as reverse gear is sellected the camera is activated. The resulting image is displayed on an AV imput on the touchscreen, as illustrated below.

Added 15/03/2005
And where is the keyboard ?
Ah there it is.

nice work man.

How did you make that cover for the screen?? does it snap in place, or slide in or what?

I have a friend who is a pattern maker. He does point of sale plastic mouldings, the type you see in the shops holding cosmetics etc.
He made the perfect screen moulding after about three attempts, and then made a cover that is slightly bigger than the screen moulding. It fits over like a glove, add a ford tranny badge and there you have it

My baadddd.

And I retract this statement: "Pretty sweet and basic install. I like it." This is an awesome install. Looks basically like aftermarket add-ons. I like much more now.
