cdevelasco: there were 2 parts to the headunit, the tape deck and the MID. They were both held in place by a metal frame. I removed the frame and flipped the tape deck to the bottom position and the MID to the top position. I did have to angle the tape deck in a bit because it extends pretty far back. But the MID is only a about 2" thick. If you look through the slideshow, you'll the pics of how I placed everything.
djmickyg: Its a Super Nintendo Emulator and thats Super Mario World. I got the emulator and all 700 games off of a bit torrent website ( www.suprnova.org). It was all in one tidy little zip file.

thanks for the information. So if I understood you correctly, you got rid of the original frame holding the HU components (MID and tapedeck). So did you the build your own custom frame? or how did you secure the MID and tape deck to their new locations?
thanks

I have the same car and am just geting started collecting the parts I need to do the install. How much was the LCD enclosure from Rich Silva? I would much rather do it that way than mount the screen somewhere else. Or pay the price of the NAV screen just for it to look stock. I've got the IBUS interface and the computer I'm gonna use already, just need to get the screen and if I could get a surround like that I would jump at it.

cdevelasco: No, i didnt build another frame, I just placed the tape unit at the bottom and it went back far enough where it doesnt move. I just unscrewed the top lid of the tape player and added some "L" shaped bracked to act as a back support for the MID that would sit above it. You can sort of see what im talking about in on of the slide show pics.

OK THANKS FOR GETTING BACK TO ME. Your explanation, in combination with the pictures makes sense. I understand the tape deck is pushed all the way back so it wont budge any further, and the mid is supported by the L bracket. The only thin I'm a little confused now is, what is stopping the tape deck or mid from sliding foward? or are they in there quite snug, so the aren't allowed to move? sorry to be so inquisitive, but your idea is so uique and great, its the PERFECT solution for me, since I don't want to lose my HU
thanks,

PERFECT! that cleared it right up. I hadn't seen how the tape deck was tucked behind that dash trim. Thanks for the help, and ideal picture, I Really appreciate it!

Theme and IBUS Apps
Do you think you could post up the theme you used/created?
Also the IBUS apps you wrote? (preferrably post the VB code)
I'm looing to do almost exactly the same thing as you in my 98 740i. Both would be a tremendous help to me!!
Also, did you try getting the IBUS connection to display the MP3's name on your console display? Shouldn't be that hard really.

ill have to pull that data from the car..ill try to do it within the next couple days. It probably isnt too hard to get the mp3 files to display on the console, but my skills in vb are limited and i havent been able to figure it out.
As far as writing the code for the button presses, it wasnt too hard. I took some trial and error to get the right codes though.
