Opel Astra Sport Edition 2 install
Hello,
Here are some pictures of my car PC project.
Hardware setup:
Epia M10000
512MB RAM
40Gig 3,5" HD (is going to be replaced by a 2,5" HD)
M1-ATX (90W PSU)
DVD-ROM & CD-RW
Software:
Roadrunner (Frontend)
Freedrive (GPS navigation)
Power DVD XP 4.0
Rear view, 3,5" HD is going to be replaced by a 2,5" HD. The 2,5" HD fits in the space at the upper left corner, next to the M1-ATX
At the upper left there is some space for the 2,5" HD.
Upper view:
Speakon connector as power connector:
Placed an extra fan:
Front view. The big screw in the middle is to pull the PC out. At the rear you can see the center console:
PC built in the dashboard:
Complete dashboard. The whole centerconsole is going to be replaced by a console with a 7" Lilliput touchscreen.
Lilliput case in centerconsole:
This is the radio I'm still going to use.

Nice start, wating for front panel work. There is really hard to find place in astra - no free space under the seats, inside central console.

That's a really sweet case you built there! Really nice!
Do you have a pic of the dash without the center console on? haven't had the time to start in my Astra yet, so I was really curious to see what's behind it. My plan was to move the AC controls in the DIN below them (where you're gonna put your HU I assume) and put the screen in place of the stock HU and AC controls.

Well,
The PC fits in the dashboard case, and the TFT touchscreen is going to be implemented in the centre console.

THNX!
Here is a picture of the dashboard without the centre console. It is not my car, I didn't take out the centre console yet. I ordered a second centre console to build in the Touch screen.

From those pics I don't reckon it would be that hard to move the AC controls. Why don't you do that? It would make for a much nicer finish...

Well, the cables are too short to put the AC controls at the bottom of the centre console. And I also don't want to put the screen to low in the centre console.

My friend's Astra is equiped with climatcontrol, so there are only wires behind control unit. Those wires goes downwards, due to this fact my friend going to leave ventgrills and place the screen under them.
Here is same project for standart AC equiped car. It is not possible?

It is possible, but I don’t want the screen fit in the console so low. I want it as high as possible. Also the cables of the AC controls are to short. When you want to put the AC controls down in the centre console you have to cut the wires and lengthen them.

That's exactly what I want to do!

Too bad about those cables being short...as I think this would be the best looking solution. Still for the looks, I think you should lose the buttons on the screen for a more factory look. I say this as I've seen an Astra done as you want to do it, and I didn't like it too much.
Personally, I don't think the screen would be too low, but then again, everyone with its pleasures.

This is how I want to make it. Ofcourse with a Opel Astra, and not with a Vauxhall Astra as seen in the picture below.
I don't dislike the look of the buttons. But then again, everyone with its pleasures

I like it! - looks like the project is going well for you.
I like the location that you picked to mount the computer, looks really clean.

This is exactly what i'm doing right now - mounting the screen in place of the heater vents and the top DIN slot, and moving the HU to the bottom DIN slot.
Removing the centre console on Astra G is easy, just pull out the head unit and there are two screws on either side of it, pull out the ashtray/cigarette lighter assembly and there are two screws there, and there are some clips around the top u can flip off with a screwdriver. Also, the heater controls have metal clips to flip off. 10 minute job.
Tutorial for moulding the Lilliput into the centre console here : http://www.cruise24-7.co.uk/tutorials/flushscreen.htm

It is not amator to ask. It is better to ask how the console is mounted than taking it apart and maybe breaking it. I didn't do is myself yet so I can't explain. But I think the tutorial Phaser2001 posten will help (THNX Phaser2001 ).
Good luck!
