Yeah for now I just ran a microphone to visor, for voice commands, nothing else is new. Actually I used to use shutdown mode when ignition off. I moved to hibernation last week and I am happy with it.
Blue Tooth drivers i think makes computer run way slower, so I need to work on uninstalling that trash.

Hey, just between us WRX guys, i just picked up a Logitech Netplay Playstation 2 controller off eBay for $12.75 USD shipped. It comes with a removable micro size USB "qwerty" keyboard that is fully PC compatible. I plan to just dump the controller and keep the keyboard in the car. I know its wired, but its small and the cheapest thing ive seen anywhere for as "clean" as it looks.
Oh yea, and Hibernate FTW! The only time i ever reboot my CarPC now is when i have new updates to install that require a system restart.
And bluetooth really does kill system performance, i had one on my monster of a desktop and noticed slowdowns when it was connected, now im not too sure i even want to use it in the car.

Just between you WRX guys?? that seems kind of an *** like thing to do....
Well anyway yeah I "borrowed" my friends old controller and it seems to work well... i havent had a problem yet....
I think tho that im going to go with an illumitanted board for my upcoming design.... i found that typing in the dark was kinda a *****.... especially since its not completely a standard design (QWERTY yes but like enter and the arrow keys etc are a bit differently placed as are on laptops and other mini keyboards.)

ok... time to help you out. first, there are several cheap (under 20) wireless RF keyboards which work well for installs, you will see that wires will severely hamper how yiou use the computer.
second, for the hibernation thing, have NO startup processes that are not needed, this does two things
1) boot faster
2) no program updates
then go to windows update and stop it altogether (along witht he firewall... thats crap too)
you are in a carPC, theres no need to update your os, if the thing works like you want then updating will only make the programs you8 are using less compatitable.
and for bluetooth, when i install it it wont be running the entire time, you are correct saying that it is slow and that it slows down performance, but it is also vital for my phone intergration ^^
i want phone calls to be controlled by my car PC as well as being able to ahve a remote for the music when im away from my car... and theres really only bluetooth for that.
come up with a new wifi that works better and ill switch to that (like th 60ghz ones companies are starting to talk about)

yeah i actually modded my wireless xbox controller to hook up to my computer, (its a usb controller anyway, just a different plug)
but i really dont have much use for it other than playing games sometmes (which i really dont do much)

DUDE, you seriously need to lighten up, it was just a little fun comment i was tossing out to the other subie owners. Besides, this controller/keyboard setup has been discussed several times on the boards here, some eveh with pictures. This one isnt illuminated, but it IS qwerty and ultra tiny with an 8ft long cable. If you cant route this thing inside your car, you must drive a suburban or stretch limo.
I have to disagree with the comment about a cord hampering how you use your carpc. I use my carpc from my drivers seat, with a full size wired keyboard, and a handheld 3 button trackball and have no problems with functionality. Once i get this tiny keyboard, im routing it into the glove box so i can just tuck it away when its not needed or when a passenger gets in the car with me.
Heres the link to the auction I won, but this seller has TONS of them available and if you get in at the right time, you too can win for only a penny. If you can find cheaper hardware.... buy it.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...9064&rd=1&rd=1
Keep in mind, your getting BOTH a removable micro keyboard AND PS2 gamepad. All you would need is a simple USB adaptor cable to use the gamepad on your CarPC (another 5-10 bucks for the adaptor)

umm yeah... i wasnt ****ed... i was joking....
And there are cases where a wired keyboard can be an issue... one example is if you have someone in the back seat and its wired throught he glove box, unless the cord is extra long, its a problem. A simple RF keyboard seems to work well.... im still not sure what im doing... there are many types of keyboards out there...

thats a good point about the backseat, but in my car, a backseat CarPC operator is just as taboo as a backseat driver. And besides, i can still count the number of times i have had human passengers in the backseat on both my hands, and my dog sure isnt going to be operating a keyboard anytime soon, hes got an old snow brush to gnaw on for entertainment...
RF wireless keyboards are great, and I personally use the S510 set from Logitech on my HTPC, but for most peoples needs in the car can tend to be quite a bit more pricey (when you start buying brand names) and the price can be beyond the justification of how often you really need access to a keyboard.
BTW, to the Subie guys, i just got my new catback installed last night. WORX Tuning F3 catback, and let me say, its definitely an improvement over my last exhaust (Magnaflow Ti) Car has no restrictions from the turbo to the muffler tip and is still barely louder than stock at idle and cruise speeds. I can now HEAR my audio system without needing to use a silencer and killing the exhaust note of the car.

Nope its sitting in the corner of my garage like you guessed. Its up in the local Midwest for sale forum at Nasioc.com since i really dont want to deal with shipping, but if you want to pay for it, i guess i can find a box small enough that shipping wouldnt be rediculous. Right now im looking for 550 local for the exhaust, and shipping would be extra. Its full titanium from the downpipe flange to the muffler tip. If your looking to maximize your performance gains from exhaust i would probably tell you my magnaflow isnt going to be the best choice, it would be best suited for someone who wants to knock a few pounds off the back of the car and mate to the stock downpipe securely.
Update (11-03-06): received my controller/keyboard in the mail. Its small, but not quite as small as i had expected. Keyboard still fits fine in the glove box and the wiring is plenty long enough for what i need. I will post up a little mini review of the keyboard along with pics in a little while.

Hey Redian, remember you suggested me to get ODB2 to USB? Have you done it? I am thinking about doing it. Let me know if you have some tips.

yeah i did do it, its pretty easy, get an elmscan 320 (what i got) and then connect it from the obd-ii
the only problem i had was the odbii port was right under my wheel, and the wire was annoying because it was on my legs.
easy fix though, all you have to do is just ducktape the obd-ii port to a different position (take it out of the brace it is in) and then just plug it in and ****
im using centrafuse for viewing the stuff now... works well too ^^ you should switch to it =p
but yeah, sorry if that isnt very coherient, im wayyyyyyyy too tired atm, ill edit it later if you dont egt it
