S-10 Install,In progress,baby steps,first rip apart dash :)

Okay so right now I dont want to completly destroy my touch screen and mold it into the dash. So here is what ive gehto rigged so far. Alpine head unit hidden in glove compartment. I used expanding foam to create a mold inside the glovebox. Which I was planning on making a motherboard tray to fit inside the glovebox and then realized the motherboard wouldn't fit without major moddifying to the inside of the glovebox. So next best thing. I covered the foam mold with speaker carpet and put my stereo in the middle of it. I had to put it at an angle like that because it barely fit with the door shut.

Then I had to lengthen my stereo plug wires to reach the glovebox.

I had already cut up the dash were the stereo normally goes. To fit my alpine flush. But it looked really bad. Worse then it does now.

Then i have my carpc. No mounts, no place to put it. I have an amp under the seat. I thought about mounting it under the glovebox. For now it just sits on the floor of my truck. ( well when i say now i mean last week before my hard drive stopped booting ) I think its a power issue because it worked fine inside the house. (the hard drive)

Oh and my truck is a small chevy S10 single cab. I do have a utility box in the back i thought about putting it in. but then i would have to do a cut through to run the cables back there.

Anyways here are my really gehto pics!

Looks good! i have an 87 s-10 blazer. AC is important to me, so I kept the top vents in the center. Did you block them off of will it just blow behind?

Well my AC isn't working right now so currently i dont worry about it to much. I really need to sell the truck and buy something bigger. I just cant deside on a suv that will be perfect for a carpc

Still not sure on the carpc location. I want to redesign it and put the cd-rom near the screen. But now that I have mounted the screen I dont see where I would put the cdrom drive.

I think the carpc can go under the seat but I will have to relocate the AMP.

best way so far that i've seen (and what i plan on doing), to get the dvd closer to the screen is to get a USB case for the dvd (as long as its slim), then u can have it farther from the case than the stupid 1 foot or whatever IDE restricts you to

i suppose you could get an external dvd (full size), but then thats gettin really big :/

i think i see a bench in the front. 2 buckets with an S-10 blazer center console is a perfect housing for the carputer.

Dont mind the lettering

This is a very crude verison 1.0 design of my setup.. I was just learning so I know its not perfect...since been redone but you get the idea.... Theres pleny of room for a dvd drive, along with your headunit.

More recent after a few revisions...

Its looking good so far. Did you consider putting the radio on the shelf unter the monitor to avoid using up the glove box?

BlazinLow, Nice. Thats how i imagined what i was going to do. Too bad i have a bench seat. I'm a smoker and sometimes use the ashtray so i didn't want to cover it up but yours looks okay.

matrix_24, It wont fit without some major fiberglass molding. I did buy a under the dash stereo mount kit that i was going to modify and put under the dash. But even then it would have to come out real far like in blazinlow's pictures. I could always cut out the tray area and see if theres room to push it back more. I really wanted to get a clean look when i was all done. I didn't want someone looking into my truck and seeing this huge center console with stereo and video screen.

I want them to look inside and see wires hanging out from the dash where the stereo should be. so that they dont try to steal anything. For security i was going to take the stock s-10 stereo and build a cover plate out of it for my video screen. So when i wasn't in the truck it would look like a stock system installed.

I love how your basis for your next car is your computer, and how it will look. Thats awsome.

Did he mod his gauges too? Looks cool. I dont know if i want to take the time to completly rip my dash out to add the lcd and stereo.

At my work we have an SLA machine. I was planning on designing a replacment dash piece that I could mount my screen and dvd-RW drive in. The parts dont come out very strong but i thought fiberglass reinforcement would be perfect. I will take some pictures if i get around to it.

Okay so I worked on this design for about 2 hours now. I will probably add a usb port, cig plug, on/off switch but im not sure what else. Anyone have any ideas before i make a plastic part?

Edit: I forgot. Its a replacement for my original dash. With a cutout for my 8 inch screen.
