1985 Monte Carlo CarPC

Iv been working on this project for about 1.5 months before starting and 2 months before finally joining this forums. I have spent most of that time researching and gathering and now I think im at a point where I can make a work long and start installing. (More Pictures Coming Soon)

History:
I was first interested in this when I helped my friend install his carpc in his car.
After some thinking and digging through some computers in my house I figured that I could build a carpc... and here we are.

The Equipment:
After some digging, some dealing, and dreaming I was able to come up with everything I needed minus a touch screen, GPS, and PSU... but I had an idea... XMAS!!! I got a touch screen and a GPS... later on a front end; StreetDeack. And now the specs...
  • Shuttle PC <- That's all I know
  • BU-353 Weather-proof GPS Receiver
  • Lilliput 8'' Touch screen
  • 60GB Hard Drive
  • Front End: StreetDeack

The Install:
Well in the attached pic you can see that I ditched the ash tray/cigarette holder underneath the main console (See TS Location.jpg), this freed up the perfect amount of space for my touch screen. The touch screen is easy to see and use even in direct sun light. The TS is a bit hard to get to the hole screen when in park but I usually get the car out of park before the pc is booted so no problems.
Thus far into the build I have only been able to install the screen, my lack of patience and timing means I'm out in 20-30 degF weather, but I have that part figured out. The screen was not so easy of an install since I was planing on bolting the screen strait into the sheet metal flooring for the car but when I removed the ash tray thingy I found about 1'' of insulation + however think the carpeting was. So I had to rethink the install, after walking around my room, looking through boxes (I'm a pack rat) I found an old hdd holder for a 90 something PC I used to have. This holder had some random holes in it and I hoped that I could get it to work and sure enough I was lucky and it fit. The running of the wires is still left to be done but I have a few Ideas.
The Computer, however, is something that I am not happy with. The computer is fine, perfect for what I need it to do but stupidly enough I took everything out of the case and for some reson through it away leaving me with no case... At the time I was thinking that I could build a smaller case for it and after a night in my buddies basement I have this (Ill save this as a surprise when I post pictures) which looks like I was drunk when I made it, and sadly I wasn't.

Sound:
I have a nice sound system installed in my car already (one that suits me anyways) and I will not be upgrading it, but I will be modding it (selling the head unit, if you want one PM and ill give you more details, otherwise keep on the look out) to fit my new carpc system. I will post the spec on my system when I remember what they are.

Car Interface:
After days (yes days) online trying to figure out how to get my 1985 diagnostics computer to talk to my new car pc... so I asked here and within 5min I had my answer. The answer was (I'm kicking myself now) a site I found in the yearly hours of searching but could not confirm if it worked on my car so I forgot it: http://winaldl.joby.se/
Unfortunately because of the certain actions of a 16 year old girl on a cell phone while I was on the way home from work one night my once mint 85 Monte Carlo is is the body/mechanic shop for repairs. (If people post interest in this story ill update it later) Because of this my build/install is on hold

Final Thoughts:
That's pretty much it for now, nothing else has been modded (yet) but I do have some ideas rolling round in my head. As the build continues I will be coming up with more idea and maybe dropping them in the same thought but it will be interesting as I continue my research and my builds/buildings...

Peace.
Updates Comming Soon

Comments are more than welcome, thank you.

FKN sweet! Long live the G Body....I think I'm going to have to put something in my Olds. Looks good. Where did you mount the PC in your Monte?

What happened with the accident?

Definately going to need more pics!!

More Pictures...

I said I would get more pictures... well here are some more, they may seem a bit random. During the planning stages of this build I decided to ditch my head unit (to sell it) and about half way through taking the pictures I got bored so I tore it out and started rerunning some other wires.

I only have pictures of what I have of the TS because the rest of the computer is still in the planning stages as you may have gathered from the first post.

Nice work man, teaching an "old dog" new tricks....I love seeing technology put into cheery older vehicles.
