Red, BTW is a girl. Her name's Jan.
I don't fully understand all that software EQ stuff either. I use a Alpine H700 and it does all the x-over, EQ and time alignment separate from the PC. I kind of like it that way.
Thanks for telling me about Red...
I'm going from my pc to my alpine 9860 then back to my amp, I'm getting one for my front speakers soon. And I'm not running a rear stage. I was thinking about getting either a H700 or H701 for my alpine. I was also considering getting a stand alone processor like the one that kenwood or pioneer offer. I'm leaning towards just a processor since i don't need the cd player anyways.
I'm also trying to sell my L7 so i can get the G5, so hopefully in the next week or so. Jason could you better explain the whole ab compared to d class amp?
I was also thinking about what everyone thought it would look like if i sunk my amps in the sub box and put plexi over them with the camaro logo etched in them. If I did that i would have exactly 1 ft^3 but the 1.3 ft^3 might be better and look a bit better.

The 9860 is a good unit. If you can afford a H701 then I would get that. It's a serious piece of hardware that I don't see you outgrowing for many, many years down the road. You can run an digital optical signal from the radio up front to the H701 in the rear. It makes for a very clean signal. I'm running the digital signal from my sound card to the H701 and it's a notch above the analog signal. The flexability is great. If you ever ditch your CD player you can run the Chaintech sound card straight to the H701 using it's SPDIF output. As a bonus the H701 controller should fit in the dash space you made for the faceplate.
I'm not familiar with the new 07 Pioneer and Kenwood processors, but last years models weren't even close in comparison to the Alpine H701.
The class differences are easy to explain, but the sound differences aren't. If you picture a sine wave it has a smooth flowing curve to it. This is similar to the control the AB amps have over the subwoofer. It's under control at all times. With a D or BD class amp it gains it's efficiency by cycling the signal on and off very quickly. So instead of a smooth sine wave curve it looks more like a series of steps or stairs. It cycles like this to try and duplicate a sine wave, but it really can't. So when the volume is really cranking and the sub is really moving the signal is full on and full off to push the sub back and forth. This is fine for most bass heads who just want it loud without sucking up too much alternator juice.
I listen to a variety of types of music, not just bass stuff. I like the AB amps because they can make a good sub blend in with the front speakers and create a more realistic listening experience. The AB amps have full control over the subs movement at all times.
As far as arrainging things I'd like to see a drawing of some kind just to make sure I know what your describing. Are you wanting to sink the amps down 3" and then mount the new G5 cone up and then build the center area up higher so the magnet fits? I think it would look strange. I would want the amps and the sub closer to being on the same plane. I don't really see the point of lowering the amps. It would be easier to leave them higher and then make a cover to fit over the top. Or you could mount the newer G5 cone down, like the L7 is. You could make a cover over the amps and then leave a round hole around the sub for the magnet to stick out and to let the bass get out. Then put plexi covers over the amps.
There's really a bunch of ways to do it. It will really be up to what you think looks best.

Ok i understand the amps.
I really wish that there was another processor out there that was close to par with the alpines but not 500. I want to get a processor and scrap the CD Player, I wouldn't get full control over a processor with it anyways. how are the alpines that were before the 700 i think there was a 510. i know there were a couple alpine processors i was watching on ebay that went for around 180- 200. i'm going to do a bit of searching and see if i can find one thats a little closer to my price range.
With the bow i was talking about mounting the G5 the same as the L7 and then sink the amps, but as i thought more about it at work tonight i decided that i didn't like the idea and that I'll pry just leave them as is and make that beauty panel i talked about earlier.
I'm going to do a little researching and I'll post what i find. I'll also stay away from the pioneers and kenwoods, is there any other brand i can look at?
edit: i found the H510 here are the specs
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...ts_id/425.html
and here is one on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/Alpine-PXA-H510-...QQcmdZViewItem
I didn't know that the H710's were so cheap now only 376 shipped

Can you control the volume from the C701? I don't want to have to tap the screen to change the volume when i get rid of the CD player.

Made my cover up today. I'm thinking I'm going to add a plexi window in and etch Krypton Customs in it. On with the pictures
I completely forgot to get a shot of a normal standing prospective, I'll get that up later tonight.

The 510 is completely different. It's not what you'd call a high end piece, plus the EQ is parametric only which can be pretty tricky to set up. I'm not saying it's bad, just that I never considered it for my system. My previous processor was a Rockford EPX2 with the 28 band EQ card installed.

The 510 would have been a step down for me. In fact you might look at the EPX2 as they are going pretty cheap. They take analog only for the input, but are good units.
Typically the H701 go for $500 for the brain, but $375 is a pretty low price. If you don't use the headunit to control it you would need the RUX controller which is about $150-$200 and it has a dedicated volume knob.

I'm thinking that i'm going to save for a couple weeks and get the H701 since it's gone down so much. I will then sell the 9860 and get the c701 to control it.

Thanks for helping me understand the H701 and the differences between it and other models/ brands. I will just save and get the one I know I'll be happy with, i don't want to half-*** my install in this car, i want everything to be exactly what i want and not something I'll want to change later (at least not knowing that i will when i buy it) but anyways i shot a picture of the computer cover from how you look at it while standing behind the car.
I'm thinking about cutting the other side to make it look the same and moving the jack to just in front of the spare tire. this way I'll be able to make both sides look the exact same and i can mount the H701 behind it and have matching plexi windows on both sides. what do you guys think?

Great thread so far! I think that is a great idea to have matching covers on both sides and put the H701 on the other. Can't wait to see how it looks!

That will work.
Do you think the carpet matches? It looks somewhat lighter in color. You could probably get some dark gray spray dye or have you considered using trunk liner material? That would help it blend in and give it more of an OEM or stealth appearance.

I'm going to actually use that bedliner on my bezel when i repaint it. The carper matches the seats, the plastic is a different color. I'll go out and take a couple pictures with different settings on my camera and see if i can get you a more *real life* looking shot.

Yeah, the camera can sometimes make the colors look really different when they match pretty close when seen with the eye.
