voice command software

I've read a variety of threads about voice command... I was wondering if there's a universal program that runs in the background or something and allows me to tell the computer when to shutdown or start certain programs (media player and winamp).

Are there any winamp voice command plug-ins that work WITH the software that u install originally to tell the comp when to turn on and when to shutdown??

Any programs you guys discover recently that's pretty stable? Thanks for all your help.

with any good VR prog you should be able to bind the startup and shutdown of any prog to a voice command. same goes with commands in winamp (or any other prog). the thing is, i have not yet used a VR prog that can deal with any kind of background noise. you really have to have near ZERO room noise on every program i've used for them to recognize your voice. Wouldn't be so good when you're screaming 'PAUSE!' trying to get winamp to pause while your cell phone rings and your music is playing

That's very true, I just want to test the software anyways w/ the music and see how things go. Mainly, I want it so that it can open up applications. Anyone suggest a program?

'dragon naturally speaking' was the best i found. not a small footprint (if i remember correctly), if that is a concern for you.....

Thanks, ill definately look into that. What does "footprint" mean?

Footprint in this case would mean: install space and/or RAM use

as in footprint on the hard drive. I have not played with voice software but I imagine it could take a lot of space.

I remember seeing a circut that used 5 microphones. you place 4 next to sources of ambient or background noise (like in the back seat or by the pedals) and the 5th by your head. The circut filters all noise that it picks up in the first 4 mics out of the signal from the 5th mic. I thought that would be cool.

I work for a company that has had a great deal of work to do with voice control.
We use dragon and via voice here, we work in plant rooms and have had not much problems with bg noise. This is because you have to train it in the enviroment you'll be using it in.
It might sound extream but I'd recommend getting a mate to drive the car and then reading the calibartion scripts while driving around, the only draw back is that you have to have a screen of size to beable to read the script(s) and it takes about 2 hours to get it up to the level of being able to dictate, but by the sounds of it you dont need that level, so around 20mins should be plenty epecially if you set up a grammar file, which lets to record up to 40 different variations of the same word, for example words you'd use heaps like open and close, you could almost always get them on the first try if you set up the grammar.

Is there anyone here who knows about this? I'm thinking of doing this next to the speakers so I can filter out the music as much as possible so it is easier for whichever VR program to recognize commands.

Ever see that Ford commercial with the 2 guys and the driver says Play Artist Korn and the other says Play Artist Michael Bolten? If you notice, every time they interact with the voice control, the driver hits the mute button on the steering wheel to cut out all the music and limit background noise....
