Windows Server 2008
Has anyone tried running there CarPC on W2K8 yet? I am a MSDN subscriber I am thinking about giving it a whirl with RoadRunner.

win2k3 has better memory management over xp and probably 2000. Hence why I use it :P
But win2k8 is based on vista, i don't want to touch that for a while after seeing how vista itself runs...

Should be pretty nice if you have:
- driver support for your hardware
- compatible software
- Enough horsepower
- Enough disk space for the larger OS.
SQL Server on the go that logs all GPS data? Could be cool...

Galvitron, nice idea about SQL logging GPS data on the go, that got me thinking and it can be done in XP using SQL Server Express which is the free version of SQL Server 2005 I am sure express has enough capabilities to handle straight out logging and queries...

SQL CE only runs on WinCE or PocketPC I believe.
SQL Express is just the free version of the full SQL Server and would be perfectly fine for a car application because there are not a lot of clients connecting to it and the advanced features would not be used (replication, etc)
SQL Express should run just fine on XP but it is common in the SQL Server world to run it on a Windows Server (2000, 2003, 2008) machine for stability reasons. Not many people trust an XP machine to host a company's DB. But for the car, it is fine.

A good idea would be to have a small service running that intercepts all the NMEA sentences coming out of the GPS and stores them w/ a datetime stamp and maybe some other info like vehicle speed, direction of travel, etc.

SQL Compact Edition runs on Windows Mobile and Windows desktop/server products. It's meant for exactly the kind of devices we use here... Even SQL Express would be overkill for simple GPS logging.

Cool. Did not know that.
You would only really need one table. Text file would tie up less resources but the SQL Server could be used for fast lookups and sorting and disk space.
