Is VISTA better or worse then XP!

I was just wondering how you guys felt about VISTA. Pretty soon Microsoft will no longer support XP, so I am thinking of upgrading to VISTA. I know my system can easily handle it, but I am concerned about software and device compatiability. I run CF, which I think can run on VISTA, but Im not sure about other things, like the drivers for XM, and the HD Radio, and so on. I would like to know how you guys have faired with it.

Thanx in advance.

I run Vista and have XM, Sirius, HD radio, CentraFuse and Road Runner. Everything works. Its just a matter of preference everyone has.

Worse. FAR worse.

There is a reason that MS offered Vista Ultimate users the option of reverting back to XPSP2 with the release of Vista SP1.
You know an OS is bad when an option for top-tier users is to go back to what they had before.

Vista is the new Windows ME.

I personally like Vista a lot better than XP. There's been a lot of FUD in the media about Vista. I run it for my Media Center, laptop, and desktop. For the CarPC it's more of a matter of making sure all your hardware is supported. If you use vLite you can decrease the memory footprint. I was running my old Media Center with only 1GB or RAM.

The only problem I ever have is typically due to my Nvidia drivers, especially with ACPI power options.

I'm sure you guys will appreciate input about vista vs XP from a Linux users perspective , so here it is:

Vista IS an improvement over XP. Reasons: better window manager, security. However, it is very bulky and still propegates some annoyances that I wish windows would fix (like input focus for windowed apps, more control over subsystems (like restarting the graphics subsystem, the network subsystem, etc without restarting the whole system).

I remember a LOT of hype about "don't upgrade to XP, games will suck, some apps won't work, drivers etc". I think it just been so long since a new window version has been released and everybody has forgotten that changing any piece of software means you change the way you do some things. In the same way, that's why most everybody is still using XP and haven't switched to operating systems that are clearly better in many areas.

For the car, vista is way to bulky for most peoples hardware. MS realizes that vista is a mammoth that's why they are working on singularity.

cheers

Surprisingly, some parts actually do that already. The numerous times my Nvidia drivers crash (even during a game) the OS has been able to recover and restart the video subsystem. Not so much with networking though...the intel wifi drivers for my laptop have random problems resuming from stand-by or hibernation. I can typically recover by disabling & enabling the device in device manager.

But you're right...a new OS will always have interop problems with legacy crap. That's the burden of MSFT's success, having to support everything and anything and getting blamed for the mistakes of 3rd party vendors.

I like vista in its 32 bit form... you can find drivers for pretty much anything you use... however in its 64bit form.. you are at the mercy of 3rd party vendors for drivers... and lots of them just dont release signed drivers for 64bit...

How many of you are using minimized versions of XP. Is it hard to take out what you dont need? What tools are the best. How do you know what to take out. i have heard stories were people removed things and have to reinstall to get it back.

You have a few options, there are pre-built versions like TinyXp, MicroXp, WinFLP, etc. Although other than WinFLP they are technically illegal versions. You can also use nlite pr something similar to build your own stripped down version.

Since Car-pcs typically lag behind desktop pcs in terms of performance and hardware age (for obvious reasons), vista will clearly lag behind xp in uptake in car-pcs. There is no stupid "vista sucks" reason for this - it will be gradually uptaken, but slower.

As for "Vista is the new ME", what are you guys smoking??

I like vista myself, now that I've become familiar how to work within it.

It's waaaayyy too much for a car install though................

Cheers

i use a bog standard version of XP pro SP2 for my car pc, i killed a few system tasks that i will never need in a car, and my carpc has 1GB of ram, but its fast enough, no issues and is still smoother to use than some new machines with in theory 2 or 3 time the power
