nGhost Media Center 2.0 RC1 - The desktop for you car

Look it's a frontend, it's a media center, it's a desktop?

Yes, nGhost2.0, the "un-frontend" has reached release canidate quality. I've included screenshots and commentary:

http://nextabyte.com/nanonymous/mybl...t20_rc1_1.html

for those unfamiliar with the work, nGhost is a new paradigm in car entertainment, Frontend as a Desktop. It's a core element in the operating system interface rather than a "mask" over it. It also introduces the idea of a Desktop as a Server. nGhost speaks with other applications and can even talk with other cars running nGhost to share information like traffic, weather, etc.

On top of that, nGhost has more configuration options to make your mother's ears bleed. 4 memory managment modes including daemon mode (no gui), multiple media backends (mplayer, phonon), and a billion ways to customize it on a skin level including filtering the media listbox to your id3-tag's delite.

if you feel the urge, digg it: http://digg.com/linux_unix/nGhost_Me...p_for_your_car
or even nominate it as one of sf.net's community choice projects:
http://sourceforge.net/awards/cca/ba...185612&style=5

cheers

(this version is dedicated to 2k1Toaster for obvious reasons)

Good deal! I haven't had much luck with getting it installed as a .deb, I'm going to try compiling it on a few different distros (most likely Xubuntu first).

Awesome!

Congratulations on the release. Will you be making another YouTube video to demonstrate the new features in this version?

I'm going to try and get this running in Debian again.
Never had much luck with previous versions, but hoping I can get it to work this time.

Here's it running in my VM under virtualbox in LinuxICE. You also get to see the speed of an unoptimized, default boot (about 31secs).

There not too much going on, but 2.0 is just supposed to be the foundation of what we will be adding in subsequent versions.

The package on SF.net is built for ubuntu, so there may be some dependency naming issues with upstream debian. I think you can force install/ignore the dependencies and then just install them later.

a few notes that may help you avoid issues: /etc/nghost/nghost.conf is your friend. Configure it to point to your media and start "nscan" at the terminal. nScan is nghost's media scanning/watching process that should boot up in initlevel3 (before the gui). nghost will connect to nscan and tell nscan to create the database populate it with the media in "music".

You should be good to go after that. There are a few bugs that we need to fix, but for the most part, it's pretty stable.
