Recommend linux distro and front end.

I have an older 500mhz notebook with 320mb of ram I want to use as a temporary carputer until I build something a little more powerful.

I hate the lag when doing anything in any kind of newer version of windows with that slow of a computer and figured Linux would be the way to go. I don't know linux, took a class in college and didn't get far because my mouse drivers would not work, and I couldin't get video drivers installed. The instructor kept telling me to just reinstall linux, it should install drivers automatically.

I finally dropped out of that piece of crap class and took a different class for the credit I needed.

Anyway, like I said, i don't know linux. I have installed it since that class, and it worked ok, I just didn't know how to use it very well.

Can anyone recommend a linux build and a linux front end that will play mp3s? I will get a touch screen but for now I am plan on just building a custom controller by using an old USB controller and mounting new buttons on a circuit board. Im not worried about GPS, videos, or anything else. I basically just want a big MP3 player. This is just so I could figure out how I want to mount my screen and experiment with control design. I am going to rebuild the console of my dash so the screen looks stock.

I just want it to be simple to use and easy to install.
