Frontend for older hardware like 500Mhz CPU
Hi To all,
Is there any front end out there that will work well on a 500Mhz pc with 256mb of Ram.
I am using riderunner at the moment but it has a delay of about 5 to 15 sec when I touch the screen. the screen work in Windows XP Home.
All I need to play my mp3s and edit a playlist
Thank you for your time

CarPal runs very nicely on a FitPC which is close to the same specs as you are talking about. It has mp3 playing and playlist editing capability already, though much other functionality is still in active development.

if ur willing to pay $7 for a winamp skin.
you can use winamp with the Nitrous CTI 2 skin/.
you can download the demo and see if u like it.
its made for touchscreens you can use in cars.
im currently testing it out.
i also use centrafuse , but i love winamp for its SPEED.

RoadRunner/RideRunner (whatever...) is very fast. It's the complexity of the skin that will bog things down.
Since you already have it installed, switch to the BMV2 ("Brushed Metal Variant 2" I believe). That should be speedy assuming you have flash installed correctly with the ocx files.

I'm the one that's running CarPal on a 500mhz FitPC. The specs are the same as yours it appears, 500mhz and 256mb ram. It's fast and smooth, and very lightweight. I'd say at least give CarPal a try, it's still pretty new, but they're adding features almost daily.

Hi Tidder,
Mine is a Alex 1c board from (PcEngines) and it would be the same as yours in cpu chip. I forgot all about those little PCs they would be mitey to install in a car. I wish I could get them here in Ireland easy.
I started using the Alex board for EPOS systems as they hang on the back of the TFT moniters. If I could get the fit-pcs I would be using them.
What os are you running on yours?
I will be giving CarPal a try and I cannot wait for some one to give it a better look.

Hi Tidder,
I have tryed carpal on the carpc and it is very fast I hope to get the skin tools before I go on hols. So I can have a go at building a nice interface for me carpc.
If you click on the link below you will see my carpc. I have mounted the brains ( pc box) on my side of the center consol. I had it power up for about 10 min to do a test will have to go some power wiring when I get back for my hols.

peewee3ie: I have just uploaded a new version of carpal (v0.40) it should be a bit faster, AND it includes the skinning tool
No documentation for it yet, but BACKUP your skins before editing, and play around with it.
Download link/release notes are here:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/carp...n-v0-40-a.html
I'll be around for a bit tonight, so post in the carpal forum if you have any immediate issues getting the skinning utility working.

Ahh Nice! The ALIX boards are awesome, I've been using them for routers for months now. I'm running a slimmed down version of XP on mine, it's a tad slow but not so bad that it's annoying.
As far as a better look goes, there's an extremely active group working on the skin side of it right now, I think in a week or 2 we might be seeing some extremely awesome things coming from them.

hi,
I have got windows xp home striped down using tools from Lite Pc which is called Xplite and it does a good job as you can add thing back in if you removed something that you later need.
I have done the same setup on a pii 500mhz with 256mb of ram and it was very slow comperd to Alex Board.
When I get back form hols I am going to try and get my hand on fit-pc and the devloping tools for windows xp embedded with license (not the trial version) and buy some run time license for windows xp embedded and build it for the fit-pc and the Alex boards
devloping tools are about €800 and the runtime license are about €40 well they are $50 each.
I have a friend who also whats a carpc. I will build a few just in case more of my friends what one.
