Pre-Beta Test Update (Beta-testers please read!)
Hi Guys,
We're well on the way to having the beta test available shortly (though it still might not arrive until tomorrow - depends on how much "real" work I have to do today).
In any event, in order to avoid any potential copyright or other legal issues (basically keeping this thing alive and free), there are several files which you can "pre-install" (ie DVD Codecs) which will also keep the size of the final beta-app installation package to a minimum.
Instructions for possible downloads - not all users will require the downloads - 2000/XP users may already have all the necessary files installed - can be found at:
http://www.ixiomsoftware.com/apx/index.asp?Action=Beta
Any questions about these installs should be directed back to this thread (if you feel others might benefit from your questions) or directly to a PM to me if the scenario seems particular to you - it's your call!
Since I don't currently have access to a Windows XP machine, if XP users could let me know which of the items are pre-installed on their machines, I would be thankful! :-)
I'll contact beta-testers again this evening with an update, (and hopfully a link to the final download!)
cheers,
GTC

Thanks for the update
Which WinAmp versions do you support? (And how are you interfacing - through the API?)

One other quick note - if you've finished following the instructions, can you drop a line to this thread letting me know. If you could also provide a few details of the outcome, it would be helpful for future communication! Maybe just a quick note formated like ...
PreBetaChecklist: DONE
OS: W2K
Player: Windows Media Player
Notes: Chose not to install DVD codecs ...

chiark - just about any version of Winamp will work, though later ones will support more functionality (see the Winamp API docs). Officially, I think I'm going to recommend 2.05+
Yes, I am using the API, though I somewhat hesitate to call it a true API as its just a post-message routine to the Winamps HWND ...
(you can do this with just about any program available for Windows, if you know which messages to send!)

PreBetaChecklist: DONE
OS: Win XP
Player: Windows Media Player 9 & winamp
Notes:I had everything already, but I also have numerous DVD software, and MS Access software installed. So I am still not sure if a fresh install of XP has these files. MFC42.dll is located in C:\windows\system32 on my XP machine

Update:
Those that have already posted - thanks! I'm just cleaning up some of the playlist issues with Winamp (I don't like how they set them up), but WMP9 is basically ready for testing.
I'm also going to take a look at what happens with extremely long playlists (ie, 100+ songs) and how to deal with potential issues - I think that all the testers may have some good ideas on what to do hear - currently I'm scrolling all lists - may be too awkward!
Other then those items and a some additional documentation (ie a matrix of the differences between WinAmp and WMP functionality) everything is looking pretty good!
I'll be sending out the beta download instructions tomorrow for those that have confirmed the requirements and posted their results here.
Unfortunately, I probably just won't get the beta out tonight (had a gruelling game of squash and just want to go to bed!), but am comfortable for tomorrow sometime!
thanks for your patience,
cheers,
GTC

Moose - I'm not familiar with many players - if FreeAmp is open source, or provides an SDK/API, it can be added - the system is designed to be very modular this way ... Adding a new player is as ~easy~ (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) as implementing the calls out to the application ... For WMP9 & Wimamp this as only been 1 or 2 lines of code per function supported (ie Play/Pause/Stop/etc) + plus a few extras for updating the display!
Certainly not a beta endeavour, but if the call for the support is there, I'll look into it!

vrx666 - very cool; however, can you start a poll in another thread (or tell me if it's common knowledge), which GPS software most people use right now? I'm concerned about the price of new software & map updates, as most GPS users will probably already have $$$ invested ...
Do you know the $$$ of destinator?
cheers,
GTC
