Why does it seem like everyone uses WinXP?
Why not linux? Doesn't corrupt the OS when turned off quicker load time just to name a few.

most people dont want to deal with the hassle of getting linux up and running , picking which linux os to run, finding programs, having to compile programs etc. Its just easier to run what you most likely allready have, windows.

Why? Simple. I normally run Linux. On a carpc, I would normally run ME (boots a lot quicker) but 1) my motherboard drivers for ME just suck big time 2) There are no really good GPS applications for Linux and Wine/Linux combo is not too great/stable for my use.

There are many gps packages for linux, here are two that I will be trying out to decide if i want win2k or linux onboard.
gpsilon - http://gpsmap.sourceforge.net
gpsdrive - http://gpsdrive.kraftvoll.at

Yepp Windows ME. The quickest Winblows to boot from the time you press the power button. My XP on my espresson gets to the usable screen in about 30-40 seconds. Post time is around 10 seconds. On WinME on the same system, I get to usable screen in about 20 seconds. 20 Second Boot is pretty good in my book until I decide to pay MS 1000 bucks for the XPe developer kit.

The main problem is that there are no vector based GPS programs that run on linux out there... Any maps must be downloaded in sections
(as images) from maquest in very small areas at a time. And because they are just images, we can't do any navigation, just display a moving map.
Now if there was a linux based GPS/Nav Program that uses the commercial Nav-Tech maps, or could somehow use the map database that comes with one of the commercial map programs out there (mappoint, delorme streets & atlas), then we would have something great to use!!
Does this already exsist?

Neither of those listed support route planning.
You should probably give a windows gps solution a shot before making your decision. I would recommend trying a friend CoPilot 2003 or live 7. If your primary reason for in car computing is gps nav, you'll settle for nothing less.

Don't know why people knock WinME, but I never had any problems with it. Not back in the day before XP when I had as my main o/s, not now when it runs on my Pentium 233 w/ 64MB RAM tablet PC. Boots up pretty quickly, doesn't crash, supports USB (don't have to install drivers for external drives).
XP is great if the system is fast enough. Stable, configurable, looks decent (can be made better with WindowWasher, etc), wide support.

I run Linux on all my "wired PC's" (Wireing into network) and all my others (That can't easily be wired..) are running XP because there is no Broadcom 802.11g support. For my car, the reason it is using WinXP is twofold, because of 802.11g and because of ME. There is nothing like ME in Linux. And also because of CoPilot2003. If I could get CP2003 in Linux of any type, I would be on that in a second. Well, if you could get me 802.11g too. Once there is 802.11g, everything other then my car will be on Linux.

I'd use XP because for one Its what i know. (I hate to admit this but) its more stable than other windows versions. And theres more support out there for windows than linux. (meaning theres more avalible software) Thats just my opinion of course

I use win2k. XP gave me issues with my powermate, among other problems.
I know win2k best, so thats what I stick with.
Linux is to much trouble for me to deal with. Doing everything with command line is a PITA, and my system requires a custom kernel to make the IDE work. Also, like Sigma, I have a broadcom wireless G card in my system and linux doesn't support it.
Linux also doesn't have any good GPS software, and that was the entire reason I started my carcomp project.
