Does Autotouch support external apps? or is it going to?
The fact that you don't have a keyboard, or rather might not want a keyboard is the whole point behind Autotouch. It's completely useable with nothing but the touch screen. I've written multiple e-mails to the destinator folks to get their SDK and infromation about it, and they fail to respond. In contrast I've gotten a bunch of information about mappoint from various sources, so I'm going to, for the moment, stay with where I can get information.
I did find the 2.0 SDK on MP3CAr and it didn't impress me very much, so I went back to MapPoint and worked with it. The only issue I've had so far is that if you're currently on a freeway (autoroute) it will assume you're off the side of it. This is because it's not really designed to do what we're making it do!
As for other applications I currently only support doing that for DVD and I'm not embedding them in my window yet. I've thought about it but haven't had other apps I'd like to use yet, once again the idea is that you can use the whole system without a keyboard or mouse, and adding other apps could break that paradigm. By contrast I've thought about designing a plug in model that would allow folks to write other modules.
I've been working hard on this lately but it's hard to develop since the only in car system I have is in my RV and we don't use it but once or twice a month so I don't get to test it out in real useage very frequently. I'd like to get a system in my STi but I'm waiting for Via's Nano-ITX mobo to do this, then I'll have one I can use all the time.
Zorro has so far been the only one giving me feedback and it's been tremendous, he and I have iterated over maybe 10 versions of changes in the past two weeks making things better. Next up in the plan is to get the settings screen to work, allowing you to change skins on the fly, etc... The rotation of the MapPoint stuff will only work if you have a pretty fast machine (i.e. like a 1.0 GHz Mobile Pentium, it doesn't work my M1000) that's why it's optional. I also want to add volume and mute to the main screen at some point, and voice to the navigation. So there is a roadmap for the future. Since I'm giving this away and have another real job the time frame is somewhat skewed. I also have a two year old at home so spare time is at a premium, however I'm a hacker at heart and always seem to find spare cycles for this project which is currently my fun thing.

The good thing about Destinator is that you can just embed it into your window and everything you need is on there under the menu button, all the controls for routing, zooming, GPS etc. You would need to write anything else as it's already so touchscreen friendly! (Try it with MediaCar and see, if you haven't already)

What I do like about MapPoint is the ability to add pushpins, I like driving down the road with NetStumbler plotting the position of WiFi points (I'm sad! ), if only this could be done in Destinator, especially in the 3D view!

Another thing while you mentioned map rotation & speed - maybe it's that Coyote's MapPoint code isn't quite optimised well enough, I don't know, but using MapPoint in MediaCar was a little bit slow sometimes, whereas using Destinator in MediaCar just flies!, rotating map as well. (Me got M10000 too!)

And just in case anyone reads my posts and gets the impression that Destinator is the 'all singing and dancing perfect app', it isn't!
It has it's flaws, mainly that the D2 maps are split into sections, they look crap and the voice, telling you where to go, sometimes just says 'yards' etc
So I use D3 maps which brings other problems, like it doesn't route properly!
Still, I don't use the routing function that much and if I really want to know where something is, I switch to the D2 map, find it, put it in Favourites, switch back to D3 map and route to it from the favourites (Which does work)

Interesting the one demo map I had for it (that came with the sample) was of new york city and it looked like crap so I didn't really bother going much further with it, when/if the 3.0 SDK comes out it'll definitely be revisted or, perhaps someone else can write a plug in.

Anyway there's a new version up there now that has the ability to change the font in the keyboard and have the volume up and down and mute on the main screen.
