cd/dvd idea

was just thinking, car pc's have the advantage of HDD, cache and ram, over normal HU's... they have the advantage that most of them offer skip protection. i was wondering, how hard would it be to code a prog to 'read ahead' a cd or dvd for a carputer, so u could offer skip protection? the cd drive would only have to read 1.5x instead of 1x and would be able to offer noticeable skip protection by playing at 1x and buffering the extra info... just wondering!!

If your talking about when playing Audo CD's, most computers read the CD's digitally so they will be spinning at alot faster than 1x, and there if a buffer and some sort of skip-protection. As far as I am aware there should be no problem of skipping while driving in a car. But I could be wrong.

Obviously you are not reading the CD digitally, I have a CD drive that is pretty dodgy, it doesn't seem to always like playing CD's digitally... however I set it to play digitally then picked up my box and shook it no skips.

Actually you may read the whole CD into memory and play it from there.
It could be done in bg, giving you the whole CD into memory in 3 mins.
This way pycar is handling it.

I wouldn't bang the side of your cpu too much or you could break the chip.

he he i was just testing it thats what i want to do, read the cd into memory. some of the roads i travel on arnt the smoothest in the world. especially with the low and firm suspension in my car. from what i understand its not a matter of reading it digitally, its physics. there is still a laser reading the disc, and if that disc bounces or whatever, that beam wont pick up the information. it is true that if it is reading digitally it'll be going faster and will be less likely to skip, but it is still possible.
