Great Radar Idea
I have been wanting to work this idea out since I was like 10 and saw a radar detector. Check it, If you could make a radar detector that was USB compatible and a plug-in that could run on your GPS mapping software. A radar detector can judge how far away and what direction the signal/band is, how tight would it be to see it on your screen, kind of a visual radar detecting unit. Cops blinking red haha, does anyone know how electronically a radar detector works and how that can be transmited to a computer? I hve no idea, just seeing if anyone maybe knows anything about.

to get anything remotely accurate you would really need triangulation.. also.. it would be very time critical.. usually radar detectors are kinda split second.. the moment you hear the beep, you slow down... it would take a lot more time to look at the gps, figure out where the source was, yada yada... good idea tho.

An idea I had when I was little which was to spin the radar detector at like 100 RMP and figure out the direction by the peak signal strength. That was when we only had X band though. I think it would too difficult with Ka band sweeping and all that now days, but it was a neat idea. I did put a scope on an Escort's connector once. It was 5V with a quick drop to 0V for each beep with no difference for bands if that's usefull info to anyone.

Yeh I like that idea. I know what your saying about the split second radar signal but depending on the signal strength, and how much was being used ahead of you wouldn't it detect the signal being used at cars ahead of you? like a weak signal on the radar detector and be able to pinpoint that on the gps map to give a general idea of the location of a speed trap.

The Valentine 1 lets you know exactly where they are and how many there are. So if there are 2, one drives by you, you wont think thats what it was and speed up again.... it would point straight ahead and straight behind letting you know theres one behind you, and in front of you.
But that unit is like $400.

I'm more interested in developing something that actually puts out a false reading signal. 46mph on surface streets, and 71mph on the freeway (looks better if the number isn't nice and rounded).
Anyhow, that way, instead of scattering the signal that normally gets returned to them, they actually get something back. By the time they realize that what they are reading might not be right, I have already spotted them and let off the gas anyhow, so there's no chance for them to verify actual speed (and therefore no evidence for them to write a ticket).
The trick is in how to broadcast something like that to a machine that simply measures the bounceback time, and not an actual data signal...

I was thinking of mapping out known sources of "false alarms" on my way to work tonight. That way when you look down at your GPS you would know if a falsey was about to happen. Also mapping common police hiding spots so you know when to slow down just by looking at the GPS screen. We could share the maps that way if you are traveling you would have the info.
A usb radar detector in and of itself would be cool though!!!

first off, a radar detector wont really save you from ****, a cop can just shoot at you when he sees you, and your radar wont know untill its too late, besides, they are illegal in many places now (at least in the south). now, what i wanna do, is build a nice radar detector into my car, hide everything neatly, set it up to ATT the music when it goes off(customizable of course), display on a touchsreen the signal strength, ect, ect, etc. now that would be cool
