Windows XP makes you activate your copy before 14 days are up. Otherwise it will shutdown as soon as you try to log on. If you buy a copy, you can generally install it on two machines. When you activate it the 2nd time, you'll have to call Microsoft and tell them that you're 'reinstalling' and need to activate a second time.
If you're installing an illegit copy of XP (one that you're borrowing) then they won't let you activate it at all. Nor can you download or install any service packs that MS will release. That has problems in the real world because you'll be prone to viruses and DOS attacks. In the car, however, I don't imaging that would be such an issue.
The majority of people actually shell out the money to buy a real copy of Windows. Hell, why do you think Microsoft is so rich? If on the other hand, you feel that MS has enough of our money and you'd like to obtain a copy in less than legal means, you'd have to do some searching. Generally, you obtain either a real copy of XP and then get yourself a crack. Or you simply find a cracked version of XP. You'll be able to install it, but it's not guaranteed that you'll be able to apply the service packs.
There are copies of XP out there that are part of a volume licsense. These typically do not need to be activated. Find one of those and you're pretty much set.
