Just open the .slx file in Target Designer and check for dependencies.
I used the "VIA EPIA M Mini-ITX Mainboard WinXP Embedded Support Package"
and have been able to install Autotap, MediaCar and Streets 2004. They are all working fine so far even in read only(EWF) mode.
It boots cold to desktop in about 35 seconds from a CF card and that is including the Wifi and Touchscreen tools. Another 15 seconds and MediaCar is up and running.
I ahve encountered 2 problems, though. The VGA drivers will not install and the PCMCIA slots won't work. Gotta fix that before I can start the install.

Good luck!

All that work and it's slower than Server 2k3
Mine boots in about 30 seconds but since I use hibernate, I hear music in 15 seconds... it's the stupid POST that takes such a long time to get through...

Without getting into my config too much, it's definitely not slower than Win2k3. I tried Win2k among other OSes and WinXPe was by far the fastest to boot from a CF card. A slimmed down version of WinXPe cold booted in half the time.
The other perks are what makes an embedded OS really worth it, though.

I was able to get everything installed(media players, media car, gps, wifi, ODBII, etc.) onto a 1GB CF card so my music won't skip when I go offroad or just hit a bump. Also, the install is read-only so I don't worry about the life of the card or corrupting data. I'm getting an IDE flash drive from Transcend next week so I can install all of the gps map files onto a "skipless" medium.

Using a flash drive doesn't allow for hibernating, but after hearing all of the hard drive horror stories in these forums, I couldn't imagine a better solution than flash and WinXPe. I have that extra 15 seconds to spare when I hop into my truck since this is not my primary music system.
This is a device for my truck, not an home PC.

Kill about 2/3 of all the services not needed to run the software you need. Clean out all the on "Run" programs, etc. Just takes a little tweaking.

I did that. Mostly because I'm anal retentive... same reason I minimize desktop icons and refuse to use image-based wallpaper.... anyway...

I noticed that cutting services made NO difference for me I'm still toying with it, but so far that's done nothing.

I alot of those services are automatic. Windows won't start them up until someone or something needs that service. By setting it to Disabled Windows will not be able to start that service. I can't remember where but there are a lot of sites that can tell you which services to get rid of. I know Maximum PC does a write-up damn-near everyother month about them. I'll have to go back and take a look soon.
