Is it possible to map different sound sources to front & rear outputs?

Hi,

I've been thinking whether it would be possible to map different sounds to the front and rear speakers in my car.

I currently only use the front outputs to the Aux-in on my CD Headunit, but my plan is to have the second speaker level outputs (rear) patched to a pair of headphones which will be in the rear of the car.

I would then want to be able to map DVD to one, and MP3 to the second (ooh, multitasking!)

Is this possible? Do i need to write my own program to do this?

It depends on your soundcard and drivers.

I have an Epia 800 (onboard sound seems to be ok for now); So i guess this would be a custom thing for me (wouldnt work for anyone else unless they had an Epia 800 right?)

Although it's not what you're looking for, I know many headunits (specifically, my Kenwood MP-6025) have an option to set different output sources (i.e. Aux and CD or Radio and Aux) for the front/back speakers. Getting it to work in your situation would be quite a task, but it's always good to know barely-related options.

Haha, thanks... I think i'll go with the 2 soundcard option if anything; but room is a major concern (its being installed in my glovebox).

Interestingly they have just passed laws in Australia saying that if a TV is playing a movie which is visible by the driver, you receive a fine plus 3 demerit points (once you accumulate 12 demerit points you lose your license, you normally get them for speeding/driving offences). In addition to that, sound from the movie/TV may not come through the main speakers (must go through headphones), incase an explosion in the movie startles the driver.

It has become so strict i dont think its worth using the car PC for movies. All i could legally use it for is navigation & possibly rear view camera.idea

if you happen to purchase any of the soundblasters you can get the kX Project drivers which allow you to map out sound to just the front or rear or both
