I've been working on my car-pc for something like 6 years now (started in the summer of 98), and I'm getting software dusted back off, and hardware ready, for the latest revision.

In my travels, I've tried a good many mp3 players, in the search for one that does the best job of dealing with the mp3s I throw at it, many of which have skips, squeeks, ticks, or just plain don't play, in other players.

So far, I think I've tried:
mpg123
splay
madplay
mpg321
mplayer

I'm using command line players, because I've been developing an mp3 player of my own (for desktop, home entertainment, and mobile) use, and I don't see any sense in writing my own decoder, when I can just as well call off to a command line program to do it for me.

Anyways, I'm just curious what kind of experience anyone else out there has as far as command line players?

i feel mplayer is the best.. mainly since you can control it from any app using slave mode

I do like that aspect of mplayer, but it's also had problems with some of my mp3s that madplay plays fine, and it also tends to be a bit slow to start. Granted, I haven't tried tweaking the configuration yet.

My experience is that mp3 players for Windows do a much better job of dealing with garbled mp3 files than the players for Linux. This had led to an interesting effect where people who develop mp3 editing software on Windows only test the output on the Windows players, so they don't even know when they are generating a corrupt output file.

Some very good examples of this are all of the mp3 stream ripping packages. The embedded track info is spliced at fixed-byte intervals into the mp3 stream, so in most cases the shoutcast/icecast frames don't correspond to mp3 frames. And most of the stream rippers splice at shoutcast frame boundary, not the nearest mp3 frame, so most of your files have malformed frames at the beginning and end.

Winamp will play these files just fine, but that's the exception rather than the rule. I have a portable (handleld) DVD player that plays MP3s (a very convenient device for portable background music) but it can't play any of my DVDs with MP3s ripped from shoutcast streams.

What you might want to hunt for is a program that cleans up your mp3s and write out files to the formal mp3 specification -- then those files should play fine anywhere. I've never found the time to hunt for one myself (or a streamwipper that works properly) but if you do, be sure to let us know!

For centrafuse 1.2, i batch reencoded all my mp3 files using goldwave with lame to compress the output. Worked like a charm! It even is full featured in shareware.

BUT its for windows.
