as for current frontends theres cobra 1 & 3 they both support it, not sure about cobra 4 aka Carplayer SP, theres also numerous plugins for winamp that will output to a serial or parralle lcd theres even gfx graphic lcds panel software for winamp, also theres many dos mp3 systems that work with character lcds
such as damp, mpx, mpfx, jukebox
try searchin on the winamp site under plugins for lcd youll find a few there
