Win95 Network drive free space?

Hey, is there a plugin or service pack or something, that allows win95 to properly give you the remaining space of it's drive over a network?

ie I have a WinME box, and when I look at the win95 carputer from it, it always reports that (The win95box)it has 2GB free. It's a 20GB Hdd, and even when it has 140MB free it still says via the network that it has 2GB free. but if you log into the car with VNC, it gives you the proper remaining space.

Just wondered if someone has experienced this?

I've seen this problem, but have never fixed it (never cared enough

). Have you loaded the Win95 service pack and all the patches? Y2K updates?

I had a similar problem when networking from Win95b to my Dos-Based machine ("Dos 7.1" with a large fat 32 partition). When using the Microsoft Network Client for Dos, it would always show about 2 gigabytes worth of free space. On top of that only the first 20 files would show up when doing a directory listing, and the network performance sucked really bad. Despite all of that, all of the files were accessible, and none of them got corrupted when being transferred back and forth.

Since then I've switched to different networking package, called "Invisible Lan". Now all the files show up, network performance is better (keeps up with cdrom drive, unlike before), but it still only shows 2 gigs worth of free space. I solved the "2 gig" problem by chalking it up as just another one of lifes little annoyances, and ignoring it.

But for a Windows to Windows setup, which should still be supported, one would think there would be a patch (or something) to fix the problem.

Windows 95 has some network problems. I've experienced the inconsistent reporting of directories over a network, and I guess we can add inaccurate drive space readings to that. Maybe you should just stick 98 or ME on there, as that would probably solve the problem.

Oh well, I never worked out how to resolve it either.... It is just a pain because filesync goes ape because it thinks that there is free space on the drive, but there isn't!

I use 95 on my "boring" text mp3 player because it boots faster. My carputer is ME though, so it doesn't have that problem....

I think it's time for Linux..

Funny you should mention that, because I think Linux has a kernel option to fix at least the directory browsing. I don't remember exactly what the problem is, but it's something to do with the Microsoft Networking client requesting data at a faster rate than the server provides it. So, anyway, there's a fix under Linux so you can accurately browse a Windows 95 box. You might actually look around on some sites with info about networking Windows 95 and other operating systems (if you haven't already)--one of those might have a link to a Windows 95 patch.

The problem exists in Win98 also.

Really? I could have sworn they fixed it with 98.

On the other hand, I guess I shouldn't assume Microsoft has fixed any of its bugs.
