shuffle songs slow on all front ends?

i have 374 songs total right now.

When i first configure a front end, it only notices 128 of my songs. These are all .mp3's, and the randomizer instantly switches between songs.

However, when i add the other 250 songs that are in .m4a format, the next randomly selected song takes like 5 seconds to load.

Is this normal? What is causing this slow shuffling? Is it because of the different format (mp3 vs m4a) or is it because of the number of songs?
My laptop is pretty strong so i don't think it's a hardware issue.

yeah FP player shuffle works lightning fast for me. since you tried it with only your mp3s and it worked fine...i'd say it was the m4a files that slow everything down
