ok, it starts to boot up, then the hard drive just like stops for like 15 or so seconds, and then starts loading again, its like this on both of my computers. can anyone help me stop this cuz its killin my startup time. thanks.

I think that the problem is in your HD. I had that problem too,apparently it was my HD. Usually it means that your HD is dying and it will stop working in a few days or week.

Well if you are running win9x then Dima may be wrong. I dont know why they tend to make this pause, but i have seen it before.

As far as i understand there are two reasons for this, if you are running with network support and some build in delays.

There are programs around that will fix some of the delays MS has put into their software.

Unfortunately their names elude me, im sure some of the others can remeber their names

I doubt it's your HDD, as if it was dead, there would be bad sectors and it wouldn't boot at all. I had this problem, and it's when your 'puter is looking for a network. I use the network feature, so to speed it up assign it a static address instead of using DHCP. But yes there are prog's out there that can boot you up in no time! I haven't used any of these for years, so I can't remember..

I don't think your HDD is dying. And i definitely don't think it is a bad sector. I think while win9x/ME is booting, it has to load certain PNP drivers. What i think it is doing, is it is searching for certain devices so it knows what state your final OS needs to be in when it is done loading. If you would have noticed when you first installed it, notice how quick it use to boot up as oppose to now. This same problem exists in WinME. Yeah they might be programs out there that can solve the problem, but i have never seen or heard of any.

I'd be willing to bet it's TCP/IP looking for an IP address. Fastest thing to do is remove all netowrking components if you don't need them.

Wow, I'm having a real problem with my boot speed. My computer goes through the memory check, then the bios info comes up, then it hangs for a full 60 seconds before proceeding. I'm running Win98lite and have done everything suggested in this thread to try to speed things up. No network is installed. Any further thoughts?

Have you disabled all floppy related settings in the BIOS?

Also, are you autodetecting your HDs everytime your machine boots? If so, then set them up manually in the BIOS.

Thanks, Aaron. I checked it out and the problem is that it's trying to autodetect HDs every time. I can't find any way to turn it off. I'm using two HDs. Boot drive is 2G and the sec master is Western Digital 30 gig. I have an old Mobo with a bios that isn't supposed to recognize large HDs. When I go into setup, it shows the harddrive, but if I autodetect it doesn't find it. Very wierd. In other words, when I boot the machine it hangs forever looking for it, then apparently finds it and continues to boot. When boot is complete it shows the drive. Problem is it takes forever to boot because it looks for it every time. I have no idea what to do.

Okay, I figured it out. Apparently, you need to have the jumper on a Western Digital HD set to "Single" not "Master" if it is by itself on an IDE cable. If it is set to "Master" the bios may not recognize the drive. That was my problem; now total boot time is about 45 secs.

I had to find out this tid bit of information by crawling around the Western Digital technical support bulletin board. Is it too much to ask to have them put something like that in their installation materials? (Sarcasm intended).
