Okay, I have a 7 gig harddrive and I filled it partway with mp3s and music videos. Now I formatted the thing with a little check in the box saying "Copy system files" and I tried booting with it. "No system disk please insert disk"
So I put it back into my old computer and went into DOS and typed "SYS C: D:" and put it back into the carputer... again it boots with "Not a system Disk... please bite me"

Is there something more than just formatting, copying system files, and using "sys" in order to get this thing to boot up correctly? I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the HD and not a floppy or whatever. Also, doublecheck your master/slave settings. I had a similar problem where I could read the drive when I loaded the OS from a floppy, but it wouldn't boot. If all else fails, pull the jumper altogether and boot that way.

Thanks Ty... argh... I read from the impee3 board that I might have to set an active partition...?? so I guess I might try that... make the entire drive (I'm using LBA) as an active partition and then use SYS to try to set it up as a boot. grrr...

anyone else have any experience with this??!?

rofl.......i couldn't help it. Yep u need to use Fdisk.exe and set the drive as ACTIVE. Also check ur bios and make sure it detects it as well as the jumpers on that DRIVE. looks like ur cables are fine.

okay...
however, I tried to FDisk ACTIVE the drive, but I got a message saying that the drive must only be #1 and cannot be any other drive... which means I have to boot with the floppy with FDISK on it, and have the harddrive as the primary master. Now I also heard that setting a drive as active also does not destroy the contents of the drive... so I'm hoping that is true and that making it active won't delete all 2 gigs of mp3s. hopefully since I have already copied all the system files on it, I won't need to SYS it again??
anyway, thanks for all your help guys. Hope that I won't do anything that would destroy it.

As long as you dont format your drive you should be safe.

Stuff to do:

Make partition

format partition (Phat Justice, you have already reached this point)

Sys partition

use fdisk to set partition active

NOTICE, if the partition is not a primary partition it WILL NOT BOOT( if ie it is located in an extended "partition").

One of the best tools for this is programs like PQMagic (but they are fairly costly)
