Finish your updates till there are none (with the exception of sp2 and other misc software) I'm willing to bet your BSOD will quit.

I've tried, and I often use Linux boxes when working/coding/maintaining servers, but for my laptop, and day-to-day use the windows software is just more comfortable i think...

Even though Bill is the devil and we all hate him, he *has* changed the world with his products, and it is unfurtunate (I guess) but a LOT of good software is only available on windows, and many that are available in multiple platforms are just lame portations and useless off the windows platform.

Dont get me wrong I love the flexibility of linux and its millions of flavors. I would LOVE to have a CarPC running it, but it just isnt upto par right now... on windows GPS is pretty lacking, on linux it is plain unavailable.
(this last paragraph is about carpc, the above post is about general stuff)

Hey guys...

I haven't posted in a while. Busy at work (Microsoft) as usual. Nobody's posted on this Vista thread about the built-in speech recognition in the OS yet. Any of you guys try it out?

Not alot in the news or the newsgroups about SR in Vista yet. I'm going to be slowly talking about what's in Vista Beta 1 and what's coming in Beta 2 on my blog, so if you don't have Beta 1, you can "listen" in there...

If you have feature requests, we'd love to hear them -- We're Listening...

So, what's gonna be included in the speech recognition? Will you be able to say "ok" and the OK button on the error dialog will be pushed?

Yeah, that and a lot more. In fact, much of what many of the utilities posted here on the board do, will be doable with speech in vista, with a much improved speech engine, and an actual user experience piece as well.

I'm curious what people would like to see in Vista RE: Speech. There's still time to add some extra stuff. All the obvious stuff will already be there: top level UI for controlling the microphone, commanding menus, buttons, and other misc on-screen elements, dictation, an improved dictation correction experience, etc.

What else would people like? For example, would you guys like to see a macro system built into the OS for speech macros? What types of macro support would you like to see built into the OS? What types of things would you like to do from the macro system, if one is inlcuded in the OS? Send keys? Start apps? What else? What are some of the craziest things people have tried to do with NaviVoice or BSR?

I'd love to hear your feedback.

Hiya

I'm on Beta 1... I haven't looked at the speech recognition yet as I've mainly been looking at XImage et al... Before I bother, is it an improvement on SAPI 5.1 for real-world use?

I would be happy to test it properly in car if that means there is any chance of improving in car recognition, as general reliability of Vista so far (In my virtual setup) seems to be OK, probably due to the 2003 codebase (I believe)

Yes floppy disks 25 of the bastards. I didnt want to upgrade to a CD drive until I was sure CD's where going to catch on. Anyway 25 disks at 1.4mb each and file compression didnt really exist very well then I am guessing min requirements were about 75 to 125mb. My hard drive was on 500mb then and that was huge. I ran it on my 486sx 33 mhz with a processor add on to bump it to a DX 100mhz. Back then you had an additional slot for a processor upgrade in your computer. I forget the name of it though.

Currently I run XP on my carputer and I dont think there is anything that would make me swap it out. (maybe faster boot time). I boot at 30secs from a cold boot. I dont think vista will surprise me with much faster. I hat having to upgrade my hardware just to support the software. Especially when the software I am running is pretty solid. I really have no complaints about XP at all, it is pretty damn solid.
I dont use it for much else than the normal every day stuff but I had never had a problem, I havent had to format and reinstall ever (in 2 years) since I had the computer and can leave it running with out a reboot for days sometimes weeks on end.
What else can I expect from a software that is responsible for running other peoples crappily programmed software.

Windows 95 on 25 floppies ain't as bad as MSOffice 4.3 on 31 floppies. But then, that's off-topic already.

I'm not a beta tester, so you might already have this, but is it possible to say key presses. For example, "Ctrl+Alt+Del" - or, I guess I could I just say, "Launch Windows Task Manger" for that , right? However, it would be useful in other apps though, like Photoshop. I could say, "Shift Plus I", and my image would inverse.

What do ya think?
