I have heard that Vista will incorporate features for gamers and hardware geeks.
1. If you add hardware to your system, even changing the motherboard out; Windows will just run the hardware install automatically and make needed changes to drivers and such. This means you should not need to reinstall the OS if you make alot of upgrades to the hardware.
2. There will be a built in benchmark utility. It will allow the user to benchmark their system. This will allow you to compare your system to others, verify if games or applications will run properly and give you reccomendations where adding additional hardware or adjusting settings to increase performance.
3. The benchmark utility will also be integrated into the OS so that applications can make adjustments to the OS for best performance. This one feature has the most plus's and negatives attached to it.
a. By doing this the programmer can disable services and OS applications to allow the program to run better.
b. There may obviously be issues with spyware gaining this ability and thereby making it more difficult to remove them.
c. From a CarPC point of view, this may allow the programmers to write code that will automatically make adjustments to allow the Front End to run better. Items like changing font sizes, screen configuration, sleep settings, bios adjustment and many other items could now be integrated into the application. When you install it, the app would see what hardware you have and automatically adjust for it.
I like alot of other people here have run MS stuff since DOS. One thing I know is that talk is just that, talk. All these nice things that MS is talking about may or may not come to fruition. We will just have to wait until they ship the final gold version to see what we get. If they do go in this direction, it will be interesting to see how well it works.

Has anyone checked Microsoft's Vista site recently? I may be reporting old news, but Microsoft is saying 2-3 second boot times...They compare it to turning on a TV.

Improved Performance
Windows Vista lets busy people be more productive. Windows Vista can recover from Sleep in few seconds, a capability known as Fast Startup. Applications and files load much faster than they did with Windows XP, and Windows Vista will significantly improve overall system responsiveness. Users will particularly notice improvements over Windows XP when opening the Start menu or right-clicking items in Windows Explorer. Windows Vista also features built-in performance self-tuning. The system will recognize and correct issues that cause performance degradation, including slow shell responsiveness and slow boot or logon.
they are just talking about suspend and resume.. which already only takes a second or two...

I hope vista useable. I just put windows 2000 back in 2 of my Win XP machines because I was tired of XP tripping over it's own bloated code. Vista's system requirements are a little high for a car PC, maybe someone will "eNlite"en it. The only install of XP I'm happy with that I own is the one in my car PC, it's an eNlite version. I tried using the eNlite version from my car in my office PC but I ran into problems trying to get my printer to work. Developing an nLite version is just so dam time consuming. It would be nice is Vista had something like nLite built in.

i just thought i'd throw my opinion in... i'm beta testing windows vista right now, so i thought i'd inform you guys (and gals) of some things....
1.) Vista takes up a considerable amount of space compared to the others. My beta install is slightly over a gig.
2.) Desktop-wise, Vista is almost identical to XP. The color scheme is different, and so is the start button, but it looks nothing like the Longhorn screenshots.
I havent played with it a whole lot, but these are the things i've noticed thus far. Hope it helps

oh, i almost forgot. My boot times are right on par with my XP machine. Bear in mind though, i'm only running the beta... a lot of this is liable to change in the actual release.

Safe Sleep & Quick Resume
The new sleep state in Windows Vista combines the speed of Standby mode and the data protection and low power consumption of Hibernate. Changing or removing a battery during sleep state is no problem, for example, because applications and data stored in memory have been safely written to the hard disk. And startup from sleep state requires just seconds.

That's gonna be sweet! Hibernate takes 30 seconds on my laptop with a gig of ram. If Vista can do it in a few seconds, count me in.

I suspect that ultra quick resume will require the hybrid hard drive...the contents of memory are probably written to that fancy new flash component.

are you running that on a tablet pc by any chance?
I need to reinstall my laptop (toshiba m200 tablet) and I was thinking maybe I'd put vista on it... how is it in terms of stability for everyday use?
I use mostly office/outlook/firefox/autocad and some other crap.... msn messenger, etc...
any thoughts if it is time or if I should go for a standard reinstall of xp from the toshiba restore cd?

I run it on a P4 3.6 GHz (Overclocked), has tablet PC and Windows Media Center 2005 built in. I would not recommend running it as a every day OS, especially with Office 12. You will need a High Power Graphics Card for it to run smoothly. You're better off waiting till Febuary for the official Beta release.
