They do like on the mac osx tiger (built in, but turned off feature).
mac's normally have "sleep" which is a mode that turns off everything than the power for keeping Ram chips alive and breathing.
if you do some Terminal work you can enable so that when you put you mac into sleep, it saves ram-memory on disk, but it also keeps power going to the ram chips for fast recovery. If you take out the battery or loose power to the device, it will do a long "hibernate-boot" the next time you boot it.

basically, this will not be very clever for CarPC's since it will always draw a little power from the battery.

I have my CarPC going into S3 Standby. The power consumption is so minimal you would not notice it. Sometimes my car is parked for 3 to 4 days and it still starts fine.

Holy sweet semi-thread ressurection.

So I just installed Vista Beta 2 and it is awesome! Everything is super smooth and runs really nicely. Ya, I'm in love. This would look seriously sweet in my car pc but I don't think I'll be installing it since I only have 512MB RAM. The Media Center that comes with it is awesome!

This thing sure does suck up a lot of RAM but it's worth it.
My system specs:
AMD 64 3800
2GB dual channel RAM
500GB SATA RAID 0 HDs.
ATI Radeon 9800 XT.

I've been running Vista for about 6 months here at the office... and I love it. As a System Admin I can't wait to incorporate the RSS features into my network... nothing like being able to broadcast information directly to all of my user's desktops immediately via RSS

Like "Stop downloading pr0n you freaking idiots."
