Prefect, another feature request please. Can you have an option to start the program but with the web cam not being active (kinda like when "preview" is not selected while recording). The reason is if the camera is active and showing image, it'll eat up about 40% of my CPU cycle.

Here's how it would work perfectly for me. Capture! starts. No web cam image is being shown. If I need, I'll click record (or Start). Capture! will start recording.

This worked great for me but it's hard to configure since I can't understand what it wants!!!

@Civic03: what do you mean?? Just the config.ini? You don't have to edit the config.ini by yourself. Most of the values can be set directly from within the tool. In the config.ini you should set the saveto-drive and -path.

@All: could someone translate the config.ini?

@tj!2k4: I did not change anything. 8-) Try to acces your cam with c:\windows\vidcap32.exe or any other app that is able to use WDM capture devices. Some posts ago i postet the original capture test app. Maybe you can check with that tool!

@b8bboi: Good idea. I try to add that when i have time for it!

Thanks, I'll use the menu itself. saveto-drive and path; what are those values? I see //menu path etc. I think it stored it under winamp by default.

SaveToDrive=C:
SaveToPath=\\media\\recordings
VideoFileName=CarPC

gives files like "C:\media\recordings\CarPC 02-12-05 16.48.40.avi"

AutostartCapture=0
Set to "1" starts capturing immediatly after the app is started without any user interaction.

StopAfterMB=500
After the video files exceeds 500 MB recording stops and starts again with a new file if StartOver=1 is set.

WindowStateOnLoad = normal --> normal Window
WindowStateOnLoad = maximized --> maximized Window without borders
WindowStateOnLoad = CES --> no borders, maximized but with some space on the top of the screen for carpc-software taskbars.

CapturePreview = 1
1=video is shown while recording, 0=background image is displayed (saves cpu power)

Any chance for text overlay on the video? For example, once every second it'll pull the contents of a text file and overlay them on the video frame in the top corner (or anywhere you want).

If so, I might modify my OBD reader app to output vehicle speed to a text file, so when you're watching the video you know how fast you're going. Just a thought, don't bother if it's a lot of trouble.

Never mind, let me make sure it runs well on my carpc first before you go adding things.

@b8bboi: here you are: Capture!.zip

@All: New Version!

I changed quite a lot so please delete everything in your old capture-folder! Just take over the values from the config.ini (not the file itself, there are new entries in the file)

- Added b8bboi's request: PreviewActive = 0 deactivates the preview video image. You can check the video display if you activate the menu entry "Options --> Preview".

- Made the value for minimum free disk space available in the config.ini. MinFreeSpace=50 sets a limit of 50MB, so Capture! will stop recording if diskspace drops below 50MB.

- Cleaned up a lot of things and made capturing a lot faster!

- Calculating the free disk space every second was very cpu intensive. So this is now done only every 10 seconds.

- Bugfixed the "Options --> Preview" menuentry.

- Free disk space is shown in the status bar after startup.

- Added a program icon image.

- Changed program name from CaptureTest.exe to Capture!.exe

I also added a cpu-load display. But this used so much cpu that it always displayed 100%

Let me now if something does not work!

Greetz, Chris

What codecs have people found works well with this? I'm not worried about the cpu running at 100% but the mp3s and GPS shouldn't really be affected either while recording. I will be having it recording all the time.

EPIA MII 12000, 512mb, etc etc

Hi Ashthos!

I have a slightly slower system, a MII1000. I run CES (CarPC Software with MP3 Playback, GPS-utilisation, Visualisation), GPSGate, ShowGPS, MapMonkey in navigation mode with speech and can capture at 320x240 with 30fps without any affects to mp3 playback or navigation.

I don't capture audio, video is captured using the old DivX 5.02 (or so..) and set to "fastest" in the settings of divx and about 4000kbit/s.

Prefect, if I set PreviewActive=0 (and Capture! doesn't show cam image), how do I temporarily "turn it on"? It'd be great if there's another button to turn on and off the camera while in non-recording mode.

Oh I see it now. Thanks. I'd still rather have a big button for that, though.
