RoyN,
I've never implied that your identity can't be stolen while purchasing in the U.S.. The reason I said I personally don't buy from outside the U.S. is because there's normally more to deal with (currency exchange rate, customs, longer/delayed shipping, etc.).
On the other hand, of course, if you're located outside of the U.S., you may not have a choice and probably wouldn't care as much about where you buy your goods from (be it USA, UK, or even Russia). All in all, I was just stating
my opinion and
my online purchasing practice.
As for the Russian thing and why I wouldn't trust it as much:
Well, here at home we're subscribed to two Russian channels that generally broadcast directly from Moscow. There are at least 2-3 daily shows that talk about "Criminal Russia" of these days. They reveal new & clever scams that take place in there all the time. These scams include the automotive industries, general hardware manufacturing, property, investments, computer related, online marketing services, and so on and so forth... And since generally Russians are poor, the scammers target foreign countries (and their people).
The second reason why I won't trust this transaction is because there are Tons of Russian
Warez websites that offer software, music, and movies over HTTP and FTP servers, as well as Password Protected files over the P2P networks.
Most of us here have CD Burners in our cars, which means that it isn't too difficult to duplicate a CD, run a Key Generator, stick a printed CD Key label on the back of a soft sleeve, and add a cheesy one-page manual to the package, all while sitting in a Drive-Thru of some Burger Joint.
Viola!
U.S. Dollars... Here we come!
