Can u copy w2k / w2k server onto another HDD?

Hey guys im our w2k server at work has 300mb of free space and everything has been done to move log files etc off the C drive but to no luck.

I want to know can u copy the HD onto a new harddrive without windows 2000 server breaking?

Does windows 2000 or 2000 server use the HD id number in the system if did a image of the hdd onto the new hdd will it work?

I just need a quick yes or no answer if u guys know

If you ghost it onto another drive you will likely be fine.

It should be fine as long as you do a bitwise copy (ghost). I would make sure that you install it on the same disk and partition. Meaning, if you had it installed on the first partition on your first drive then you should make sure you do the same on the new drive.

I will be ghosting the HDD then loading the image onto the new harddrive they are both only 1 partition so its all good

just gotta find time

Done it many times.

A straight ghost copy from drive to drive will do you fine.

Although in some rare occaisons the drive doesn't become active, this can be fixed by doing a repair with the W2k CD.

If you didn't have ghost or any other similar product there is a more ghetto way of doing it involving 3 harddrives.

1. install win2k Server on the new disk.
2. install w2k pro or XP on another. (if you have a workstation PC with one of these this will do)
3. Slave both the old wins2k server and the new in the PC which has xp or w2k pro on.
4 then just copy the whole contents of the old disk to the new disk. (make sure you have hidden files on show.)

Whats easier is to use a Linux live cd (Knoppix, Ubuntu, etc..) then use the dd command.
