OS, startup methods, hibernate options.

Ok,
I've got a few questions here.
If I were to run a sysem off linux is there programs I could buy/download to manage quick stops, hibernation, my alarm system, a turn-off timer (If I'm out of the car longer than I thought), startups from a remote, blah zay blah. WINE is coming out soon so if there is a windows program(s) that does this I would also like to know. I'll be going to fry's today to get a cable for my lcd but i am not familiar with the connection. It used to be an lcd to a car dvd player and it only has one connection which is vga connector and power in one. Any idea wtf it is? Also, I have an old car (1971 Pontiac Lemans), and it doesnt keep the weather out of the car as well as a 2005. So on top of silicone spray and silica gel packs, what could i do to further weather proof the case and keep the compenents safe? I was thinking a solar powered fan to keep it dry when it has power because I am mostly worried about cold mornings in california with all the condensation everywhere. Anyway. JOHNNY FIVE... NEED INPUT...

Programs all depend on your hardware, usually the hardware drivers will handle most things, anything else write some hotplug scripts.
