What software to strip windows xp pro down??

I've came across some threads through my search talking about stripping down windows with some softwares and install windows at minimum. What are the exact steps and what should I be aware of?

another related question,
if I were to run RoadRunner, can I set the program to start right after windows start up so I don't have to do it manually?
what would be the fastest load up time I can expect from a p4 2.0ghz or an sempron 3100??

#1: nLite -- Get your XP disk. Copy all files to some folder. Run program, follow GUI wizard. Burn created iso. Done

#2: Yes. Just stick it in Start-->Programmes-->Startup and you'll be good to go. Or you can get fancy and setup the registry manually to earn extra geek points.

#3: My C3 1Ghz equivalent to P3 700-800Mhz with 512Mb of RAM, 3.5" HD, gets me from off to blaring music in around 20-25 seconds depending on how it shut down last, temperature, and if my M2 is normal or turning it on late (crazy psu!). BIOS is the biggest thing. Oh, and I use a FULL copy of XP Pro (Initial release no SP2 crap except NET 2.0). Set your bootable HD to first device, and DISABLE (not just ignore) all the other boot devices. With the IDE devices set to your specific HD properties, not to auto. Disable boot on LAN. Disable logo. Disable virus checking. Disable everything.

thanks for reply, I have a few more concerns.

the registry sounds like a great idea, is there such a plugin for that? (for road runner)

If I wanted to run the typical programs (such as gps, winamp, dvdplayer, video) and maybe a few programs in the background, should I keep all these in a separate HD for windows to load a bit faster? Or would 2 HDs slow downs the system and that would defeat the purpose??

I'll be happy with 20seconds boot, from hibernate is fine too.

Adding to the registry is exactly what dragging and dropping into the startup folder does. It is just extra geeky to do it with no drag and drop!

Why 2 HDs? If you want super performance when booted then 2 HD's. As for booting it will slow down.
