Severity 2 XM/Music sound being output simultaneously - 1.0.9.8 - 1.1.1.0

What version of StreetDeck is this bug report for?

1.0.9.8 - 1.1.1.0

Please give a basic description of the issue here.

XM/Music sound being output simultaneously (VISTA)

Phone Information

Please list your phone carrier you are using to test with.
N/A
Please list the manufacturer of the phone you are using to test with.
N/A
Please list the model of the phone you are using to test with.

Is the system that is listed in your CarPC specs under your user name the same system where you encountered this bug?

Yes
If no, please describe your system here.
Are you able to reproduce this bug at will?

Yes
Please list the steps required to recreate the issue you are reporting.
I have read that the following bug was fixed in an earlier version, but it still exists for me. I am using Windows Vista, and it's possible that the bug still exists for Vista since Vista handles sound differently:
When I am listening to XM, then try to go into Music and play an MP3, the XM sound continues to play along simultaneously with the MP3 sound.
I am using the Sound Blaster Audigy 2NX, USB soundcard with the Vista drivers, and an XMPCR with optical S/PDIF out going into the optical S/PDIF In of the Audigy.
Please provide any relevent information regarding the issue you have encountered.

I have read on the forums about certain changes to the Sat. Radio Settings that can remedy this, but I tried all combinations of changes in the settings, and nothing remedied the problem.

For your reference, the sound-related choices I have in the Sat. settings are:

Sound Card:
-Speakers-Creative USB Audigy 2 NX
-Bluetooth Audio
-S/PDIF Output

Volume:
-Master
-CD Audio
-Disable

Streaming:
-Line-In/Mic-In Creative Audigy 2NX
-Bluetooth Audio In
-S/PDIF In- Creative Audigy 2NX

I have tried every combination of the above settings to try and get XM audio to mute when I play an mp3, but it does not work.

I have tested this in CF and it works as expected, so it seems Vista's audio routing can be "deciphered" for this...

Thanks.

Yes.

In Windows volume control, there is a level for S/PDIF In. If I mute that, it mutes the XM audio.

So I went into Sat Radio Settings again, and selected the S/PDIF choice for Sound Card. I tired this before, but I did it again just to make sure. When I hit Save, it mutes the XM output right away. So I think, good. I close SD and restart it just to make sure. When I restart SD, the Sat Radio settings has put the sound card setting back 'Speakers-Creative Audigy' on its own. Repeat the above steps. Same thing. No matter what I do, SD resets the soundcard setting back to 'Speakers-Creative Audigy.'

Not sure if this will help, but when I do restart SD after trying to change that setting, SD starts with a big red MUTE showing. When I click on an mp3, I hear the mp3 fine, but 'Mute' stays showing on the screen, and a dialog box comes up saying something along the lines of "It appears that your audio level is inaudible... would you like to adjust it now?" It's not inaudible though, I hear it fine.

It must be how SD is interacting with this particular soundcard in Vista? Or maybe it's just Vista's new sound engine.

Here it is.

Chuck, not to get off topic, but I thought I'd point something out regarding this log: You'll see that the majority of this log's size (1.5MB) pertains to every single one of my mp3's being listed as not being able to be Indexed. Thing is, when I go to the Music module and under Artists or Albums, all my music is there. I do get the error every time I start up that says that one or more of the files were not properly indexed.

Thanks,
Nola.

Just for verification, please test on 1.0.9.9 and report back with your findings.

Tested with 1.0.9.9, and the issue still exists and occurs identically. I've attached the latest log. I've added the verbose parameter to SD in hopes some more info may exist in the log to help out.

Here are two more points I've come across that may or may not help you in figuring this out:

1. I've discovered that the Sat. Radio Sound card setting automatically resets itself back to whatever is set as the Default sound card in Windows sound settings. That's why it kept jumping back to "Speakers-Audigy..." on its own. So, I set the 'S/PDIF In' as the default soundcard. The sat radio settings will then retain the S/PDIF setting as the soundcard. Unfortunately, the same behavior is still exhibited: You hear both mp3 sound and XM when switching from XM to mp3.

2. Every time I start XM now, I get the message that it appears my audio is inaudible, and do I want to adjust it now. When I hit 'Yes' and go to the mixer, it won't allow me to raise the "Media Playing" level. It will move with my finger when I try to raise it, but as soon as I let go of the screen, it jumps back down to zero on its own. This does not affect the audio at all though... I can hear everything fine even with the Media Playing level all the way down.

Thanks.

One more thing that will hopefully help: In Centrafuse, switching from XM to mp3 works without issue. In the Sat Radio settings in CF, one of the settings is called "Line-In Device" (which I assume is the same as "Sound card" in SD sat settings). One of the options for CF's Line-in Device is "None." That's what I have mine set to, and get perfect results with it.

While this issue has not directly been addressed by the developers, I will recomend retesting with the latest release (1.1.0.0) and reporting back with your findings.

If the functionality has changed, we need to know about it.

Just wanted to post an update on this. Creative released an updated driver for this sound card. I installed it, and the issue unfortunately still exists.

The problem is definitely related to the fact that there is no choice for "S/PDIF In" under the "Volume" choice in Sat Radio settings (S/PDIF In is the input on the sound card that the XM unit is plugged into. In XP, there IS a choice for it, and everything works the way it is supposed to. With Vista's new sound engine, Streetdeck isn't seeing the SPDIF In level for some reason. I can get to the SPDIF In level in Windows Sound Mixer, and as stated in post #3, it mutes fine when I mute it in the Windows Sound Mixer.

So we just need to get Streetdeck to work nice with the new Windows Mixer in Vista.

Severity 2 XM Module - 1.1.0.0

What version of StreetDeck is this bug report for?

1.1.0.0

Please give a basic description of the issue here.

XM Module

Is the system that is listed in your CarPC specs under your user name the same system where you encountered this bug?

Yes

DELL C840 Laptop
2.00 GHz Pentium 4
768 MB RAM
40GB HDD
CREATIVE LABS SOUNDBLASTER 2 AUDIGY ZS NOTEBOOK
GEFORCE 4GO 64MB VIDEO CARD
XM PCR
WINXP PRO
If no, please describe your system here.

Are you able to reproduce this bug at will?

Yes
Please list the steps required to recreate the issue you are reporting.

When i run the XM module, the wave line gets muted and when i go to the music module and select a song, the XM does not stop and i cant hear any music from the music module either (due to wave being muted automatically when the xm module is run). The only way around it is to exit out of streetdeck, unmute the wave and sometimes take the slider all the way to the top (SD brings it to the middle sometimes) and then run SD again.

It appears that in this version, i can only operate one module before having to go back to windows to change settings.

Please provide any relevent information regarding the issue you have encountered.

See above. I'm using XMPCR
