Severity 2 Volume Control Doesn't Work in Vista - 1.0.9.8 - 1.1.0.0

What version of StreetDeck is this bug report for?

1.0.9.8 - 1.1.0.0

Please give a basic description of the issue here.

Volume Control Doesn't Work in Vista

Is the system that is listed in your CarPC specs under your user name the same system where you encountered this bug?

Yes
If no, please describe your system here.
Are you able to reproduce this bug at will?

Yes
Please list the steps required to recreate the issue you are reporting.
Move the volume slider up or down to mute and the volume doesn't change. However when I move the slider for the playing media the volume changes. The only way to change the volume is with the Vista volume control in the taskbar.
Please provide any relevent information regarding the issue you have encountered.

I originally tested SD on a XP machine earlier this year and it worked so I don't know if it is Vista or my new machine.

We are aware of this issue with vista and Streetdeck. There is a cheep solution with a griffin powermate for volume control. Other than that we are working on a software solution but this is a lower priority issue due to the low number of vista car PC's. I will report the issue to our developers again. Thank you for the testing and reports!

I have an idea of a temporary workaround. How hard would it be to code a check box in settings that when checked will allow the main volume slider to be directly tied to the playing media slider, because the playing media slider works in Vista. Thanx in advance

Your kidding right?

I used the demo and got some choices of which line to output sound on ... the volume didn't work, but I assumed it was configurable down the road so I didn't mess with it. Now that I purchased SD I find I can't control my volume ? I can't even figure out how to reconfigure the sound output anymore, it's no longer an option. 1.1.0.0

I'd like a refund if that's the case - no point in spending $200 for something I can't even use the volume control in. Isn't volume on of the most important parts of this whole program? I can't reach half way across my cab everytime i want to turn the volume up and down - in a full size truck that's just dangerous. I can't believe this isn't the highest priority at the moment. Rediculous.

SD has never had a config for which line to output sound so you must be talking about the xm configuration. SD is also optimized for xp not vista, and when you bought the software windows xp home/pro is listed as the required OS.

Per the above I show Vista as a supported OS ? Was I mislead ? I wouldn't have bought it if I knew vista wasn't supported.

I have spent some time working with vista and SD. Some sound cards like to play nice and some do not. I have reported this to our engineers and they are currently working on a solution that should fix this. Until then I understand the importance of volume control. I'm a control freak. I just added THIS to the store. For $25 it works great with SD. I will report back as soon as I hear more on vista control.

Yea I think the on board sound on my AOpen by realtek is one of the sound cards that didn't agree with Vista. I installed the latest Realtek driver and software to get the line-in passthourgh to work.

I assume that the problem is Vista volume control virtualization which SD needs to work around (such as described here, for example, http://blogs.msdn.com/larryosterman/...ows-vista.aspx)

However, there is a quick solution that should work (read - I haven't tried it, but think it will work): right click on the SD shortcut and click on the compatibility tab, make SD run in XP SP2 compatibility mode which turns off various (including volume) virtualization.

Mark, I tried running SD in XP Compatibility mode per your suggestion, and it did not fix any issues for me, and in fact, it made things worse for running XM. Running in this mode caused me to have no soundcard choices at all in my Sat. Radio settings. I tried entering the Sat Radio module anyway, and I got stuck in an error message loop that locked me from doing anything other than hitting ok on the error message (message was "Incompatible sound device for Sat. Radio" or something of this nature). I had to force a shutdown of my pc to get out of the loop.

So anyway, if anyone tries SD in XP Compatibilty mode, MAKE SURE to check your Sat. Radio settings... if there are no sound card choices at all, DON'T try to open the Sat. Radio module, or you'll be forced to reboot. If you don't use Sat. Radio in SD, then this may be a satisfactory workaround for volume control.

I hope this bug is addressed soon.
