Exclamation ElmScan 5 USB and StreetDeck

Hey all,

Inbetween rants about the future of StreetDeck I decided to pull out some diagnostic equipment, rip apart my dash, and get to the bottom of why the ElmScan 5 USB is not working with the StreetDeck plugin.

I can only speak to the USB version of this device as I have no others to test with. It appears that the StreetDeck plugin tries to initiate its handshake with the ElmScan at 9600 baud. When using ProScan locked at 9600 baud and then starting the same handshake, it fails. However, when I lock ProScan at 38400 BPS and initiate the handshake, the device recognizes the handshake and starts passing data.

To verify that this was the case I opened Hyperterminal and locked its settings to 9600 baud and tried to handshake with standard modem commands (ATZ, etc). This failed and the ElmScan returned garbage to the terminal. When I disconnected and reconnected locking the data rate at 38400 BPS, all the modem commands succeeded in communicating with the device. I got good status return and more.

Maybe when we get some proper support, someone at StreetDeck can look into the driver that ships with it.

Sorry, using an ELM327 (elm323) here and it works fine. What is an ELM 5 for?

The ElmScan 5 USB is the product definition, but it uses the ELM327 chipset. My GUESS (and its a really really educated one, I AM a systems engineer) is that the connection via USB is locked to 38400 bps and that the translation chip for the USB->COM port cant make the translation at a lower rate. When StreetDeck tries to connect, it does so at 9600 bps (as does ProScan by default), however it rejects the connection and the ElmScan spits out gibberish. When I locked the COM port to 38400 on the same exact system using ProScan and seperately HyperTerminal, it worked. There is no way to set and lock the baud rate in StreetDeck, so that definitely narrows the problem down.

Hi

The Elmscan5 USB's baud rate defaults to 38,400. However if you open the case, you can remove the jumper that is present (on the middle pin) and it will then default to 9600baud. You can find the exact instructions on the scantool.net forum for changing the baud rate.

If you would like to try our OBD 2007, you will find that the baud rate is completely configurable up to 500,000 baud, although I suppose that would not work well with StreetDeck. Could you not contact the developers at StreetDeck and ask for the baud rate to be made configurable? For a further discussion on baud rates for the Elm327 chip, see the thread Elm 327 v1.2 on the OBDII forum.

wait... can you dumb this down for us non-computer people?

I bought the Infill w/Streetdeck and the Elmscan tool but never got it to work properly, even with the software and everything.

and considering it never came with installation instructions (the ELM stuff), i never could figure it out and got very frustrated with it. So can i get this to work then? do we have to use the software that came with the Elm scan tool or can we run it with streetdeck?

thanks so much!!!

I'm sorry but I don't know anything about StreetDeck and getting our software to work with it. However you should have no problems getting our software to work with an ElmScan5 scan tool if your car is OBDII compliant. Download our evaluation copy from our website, you'll find a comprehensive user guide included.

If you have technical questions about how it works contact me via our website.

thanks for posting!

link/information about your company and website? My tool came with a disk with software on it, and i tried to run the software and cable outside of Streetdeck, and couldn't even get it to work on its own.

I do have an OBD-II compliant car, and even have the manufacturer's VAG-COM software, and am able to run that successfully into the same OBD-II port. I'd love to further the tech support on this with you if i knew where to go?

cheers!

I've been told I can't post links to my web site on this forum, which sort of makes it pretty much impossible to communicate with members here. The moderators just delete the posts, because of the dumb mp3car forum policies.

However if you look earlier in this thread you will see a link to my website. Some how they allowed that one. You could also email me at support@glmsoftware.com, that will get me directly. Do that and I'll be able to give you unrestricted technical support,

I have to say, his technical support is the best I have ever came across and his software is awesome. I use it every day. He solved a problem that had nothing to do with his software, but was my car's lack of OBDII compliance. GLM changed the code in order for my vehicle to work properly with ODB 2007.

I use his software every day, especially the MPG read outs and dashboard, and is a VERY smart dude to boot.

Sorry for the detour on the thread. Back on topic. His website is www.glmsoftware.com

GLM Software

Just downloaded the software. I think this is just what I have been looking for and it DEFINITELY needs to be incorporated into Streetdeck! 2 little bar graphs do not cut it IMHO. If it looks as good in the car as it does on your website, I would be tempted to run it stand alone!

Thanks for the link!

Looks great! Would love to see an SD digimon for this! However, my computer wouldn't hibernate after loading it.

Still, really good program.

Daniel,

Excuse my ignorance but what is an SD digimon?

OBD 2007 shouldn't have any affect on hibernation. Would you like to take that to technical support at support@glmsoftware.com so I can work through it with you there.

Digimon I think is some japanese anime villain or something like that. Sorry, I meant digi mod. Short for DigitalMod. Below is a link that will give an explaination, but basically, it allows for things to be embedded into Streetdeck. I would love to see your dashboard and fuelpage brought into SD. As for tech support, not right now. I just wanted to see it, and I was quite impressed! But right now, my attentions are other places. I am sure I did something else that effected the hibernation. Did a restore and everything came up peachy.
