SD will not import POIs successfully, unfortunately.
Hope this is fixed in the next update.

Has SD ever been successful on importing POI's in previous releases? I would assume that importing POI's would have been one of the first navi features added when released because its kind of important.

First of all, don't "assume", you make an " " out of "u" and "me". ;-p (sorry)
Second of all, yeah, you would think that wouldn't you...
I think that almost dailly about so many bugs I encounter (or are they feature requests?).
HOWEVER, I do need to keep reminding myself that this is really only a v1.1 product, and with that in mind, it is quite an accomplishment. I think we are all just expecting too much too soon. I'm trying to make it a habbit of keeping that in mind before blasting the SD team going forward -- a pre-new-years-resolution if you will.

I spent some time tonight trying to import custom POI's, with no success. I have version 1.1.1.0 installed. I followed the instructions GoC set out earlier in the thread. Dragging it onto the SD window, it was recognized and said SD imported it. However, when I searched the custom POI's they weren't there, including the local one I added.
Trying to import it from the 'import poi' screen didn't work at all. SD didn't recognize any of the csv files I had on my flash drive. I used the example file and added my house. No luck.
On the upside, I found a website that will translate one type of gps file into another, including csv's and Microsoft Street and Trips 2006.
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/gpsbabel/
So using the the second site http://www.gps-poi-us.com/index.html that DAE51D posted earlier, at least it looks like there's a way ahead for red light cameras and other POI databases. Unfortunately, the one file I downloaded didn't have all the required fields. The airport POI file was only a dollar, but it only had the names of the airports and the lat/long. Translating it didn't work, but it was worth a try. I guess the next thing to do is figure out which file format (Garmin, Tomtom, Magellan, Navman) has all the information SD needs.

I would be happy just to get the manual made excel file to work, I haven't updated to 1.1.1.0 yet but if your saying the custom poi import still doesnt work i will just hold off for another update i guess.

It would be nice if GoC posted what changes had been made to the poi importing so we would have an idea of what was wrong before and what has been fixed.
Nice work finding those sites. If they still don't work, thenit probably wouldnt be too hard to write a custom script to provide just what as needs. It should be the same as ms mappoint, though.

The import format is exactly the same. The fixes were mostly with the database they got copied into failing because of one of a couple errors. The UI was also simplified so that the imported pois shows up on the main poin page rather then the custom type selection module.
Alot of online poi formats just seems to have latitude, longitude, name, and description. StreetDeck currently requires the description to be broken down into a complete address so they are probably not going to import correctly. We will probably support a a simpler format in the future, but right now its not on the road map.
As long as your file has a latitude and longitude in the 7th and 8th fields, the import should work.

Nope, and likely won't for a while. Leaving for a short vacation later this morning, then back to school for me.
Good luck if you try it yourself!

So, a few updates later and 7 months time...has anyone been able to import/update POI? I have yet to try, but I've been finding my POI becoming more and more out of date and with the uncertainty of how the future release of Mappoint 2009 will play with SD I'd like to be able to find a local Chinese food restaurant a little easier (regardless of how bad the Chinese food is here in MD).

POI's are currently being worked on. As for mappoint, yes you can load/reload, but if streetdeck slows considerably, read over this thread.

Are you saying that they are currently working or a year later they still aren't working but being looked into? As for boot time, that's never been a problem and I'd like to keep it that way:0 [hence why I asked before fiddling with files]
