DVD playback choppy in SD but not in WMP

I am having issues with DVD playback in SD. Specifically, the DVD loads and plays, however:
  • the audio cuts out intermittently and repeatedly for 1/4 to 1/2 second in scenes with a lot of fast motion/actionon screen
  • the video becomes slightly choppy during those same scenes

However, if I exit SD and play the DVD fullscreen in WMP, I experience neither of the above issues. I experience the same problem with any disc I try to use (brand new and without any scratches or slightly older, with a few very minor scratches). The behavior is the same whether the disc is new or old, and occurs throughout the disc whenever there is a high level of motion in the scene. I am using a slotload Panasonic DVD/CDRW drive in an external case connected to a USB 2.0 PCI card.

I have downloaded and installed the recommended codecs for SD, and the system is otherwise working without issue...so I'm not sure this is really a bug...

Any recommendations?

I doubt there would be any info in the log file, as this doesn't cause an error of any sort...but I'll post it when I can.
