DVD failed to initialize
Ok, I spent all afternoon yestarday chasing problems from SD. I ended up starting from scratch, with a fresh install of everything, including windows. Now.... EVERYTHING works great now, except for the DVD player. It fails to initialize or some message like that. I really would like to make this work. Any ideas? DVD's play fine with WMP

a copy of the exact message may be helpful.
Off the bat I'd say to confirm that you have all your codecs loaded.
google "k-lite", and install it.

Vista or XP? DVD playback does not currently work in Vista.

I've been wondering the same thing for some time now. The two major issues left to address in Vista are DVD playback and audio control.
I have no idea why DVD's don't play in Vista, especially since they play fine in WMP in Vista, but the error you get when you try to play them in Vista is ugly. The Centrafuse folks figured out how to fix it, I would hope SD folks can. The other thing is audio... Vista's sound engine is completely redesigned from XP. Some audio functions of SD will behave normally in Vista, but most won't.
The SD people have said they are not placing high priorities on Vista. That was several months ago though, so hopefully it's closer to the top of their list.
Anyway, the original poster's issue is with XP, so I'm actually straying from topic here.

It looks the problem is coming from trying to use the VMR to play DVDs. The VMR is the XP way to play them and should be backwards compatible with XP, but apparently not on all hardware. Vista now uses the EVR to play DVDs and probably what will fix your problem. We will eventually add EVR support. Its not going to make it into the next update though, but possibly the one after that.

So basically you are saying yet another feature of SD that wont work for me? I had it working originally in the trial version. I am begining to really feel ripped off now.

Theres no differences between the trial version and the full version. If it worked in the trial version, something else changed between when you registered and when it was working. DVD playback does work in Vista through the VMR. It is possible to get the current version to work. I don't know what else is wrong with your system other then it doesn't want to play a DVD through the VMR. Its probably related to the video driver you have installed or some configuration of it.
