Yes it is a one time fee. It will never expire and all patches will be free. The version will be supported for at least year, or until the new version comes out, whichever is longer. There are a few feature updates still yet planned for this version that will be released for free, but after that there will be no more feature updates, just bug patches as needed. You will be able to add features through skins and DigitalMods though.
Version 2.0 will probably not come out for at least another year. We haven't really discussed version 2.0 in depth yet, but it will probably be an optional pay for upgrade with significantly updated features and new nav data.

I like to test my Front Ends on my main computer and when everything looks good I move it to my car computer. What I think is a flaw with the registration with StreetDeck is I will have to buy two licenses for this ...... 149 x 2 or even later 199 x 2. I think that is kind of bull**** should be able to allow two installs per license!
I don’t even know anyone that has a car computer but me so the thought of giving out my license wouldn’t even work many people are the same.

You can alway run it development mode on your main computer. I dont think having one lincense for one computer is unreasonable considering the fact that most people would rather get a copied version than pay for the sofware. All i would like to see is a way to transfer my license just in case i upgrade or replace my HD, but i definatly think it was a good move on their part by tying regirstration to your Hardware code.

A. I agree, piracy protection is lame and has only indirect benefits, but we thought long and hard about worst case scenarios and hardware locking was what made us feel comfortable about releasing the product on the internet. I'm sorry for all the ligitimate customers it hassels, but its something we feel is necessary at this point in time.
B. The dev enviornment works in the same exact way as the regular program. The only difference is you won't hear audio, the program won't go fullscreen, and won't allow you to hibernate/standby/poweroff or basically allow you to do the things that should only be really useful in your car. We designed the dev enviornment so it could be used for this exact purpose of testing stuff in the house. Specifically, why is this not enough and how could we make it better for this use?
C. If this is the only issue that is keeping you from purchasing StreetDeck and you are otherwise ready to buy, send me a PM and I will see if there is a way we can accomodate you.

I understand what you have to do maybe you can make it so it has to activate online and counts the installs. Make it so you can etheir activate online or it hard codes to the hardware. You choose that option when you buy it. So that way I could install it on my CAR PC and then on my HOME PC for testing.

The dev enviorment is cool but I want it to play music to fully test it out. I just like being able to run the actual FE for final testing of things without running out to the car.

T his is one of the issues, my other conern was that limiting view of things while driving. I want to have the visualizations glowing in my car at night while I drive I won't be fully watching them but I want it there like a aftermarket deck would with the pixel graphics. I think its lame that you limit views of things but I understand maybe dvd players in aftermarket decks won't play if you drive. Most of these can be overcome though. Part of the thrill of a carpc is having all those cool features there that those aftermarket decks block out. Make me sign a agreement or something but I want that. If you block this feature it makes me think what else will you be blocking while driving.
When you register online make it so you can choose activation
1)
BY HARDWARE(HARD DRIVE SERIAL#)
BY INTERNET(LIKE WINDOWS XP)
2)
Allow all features while driving like visualizations.
I made a skin for road runner awhile ago and the visualization was the center part to it.
Thanks

Yes.
We just added a new web services employee to the StreetDeck team today and I already mentioned we would be offering the ability to transfer a license at some point in the future. How this is implemented may change over time to be whatever is most convienient for our customers, but the ability to register and transfer a license is something that we will always keep.
We woudlnt' be able to give the dev tools away for free if they allowed you to run StreetDeck unaltered in your car. A silent, but otherwise relatively unaltered testing platform is really the best we can do.
The safety features in StreetDeck are no more restrictive then what is status quo in other aftermarket in-vehicle products. The safety features are there because they make using streetdeck safer not because they make it more usable and not just because we want to be restrictive. I can't say that there is no way to bypass the safety features, but its not something that I will discuss. I am well aware of what is possible with a computer in your car, but StreetDeck is and always will be designed to make using a computer in your car a safe and legal experience, whatever that means. I'm certainly not saying front screen visualizations will never be possible in StreetDeck, but they do raise enough safety concerns as this point as to make them a low priority compared to the more practical features on our list.
