If mappoint is installed, it will work with it.

I have mappoint installed and when I press Navigation button I get the message: "Navigation failed to initialize properly. Is the navigation data installed?"

I also checked mappoint 2006, comm-Addins, and SD plugin does show up there.

Is the plugin checked?
Run with -verbose and send the log to chuck@mp3car.com.

yes it is checked.
but dont' worry about this. I just tested the setup on another PC and it works. The previous PC has other versions of Mappoint and Street and trips on it earlier. So that may have caused some confusion with SD.

Do Mappoint and Streets and Trips 2006 use the same map data?
Would either work with StreetDeck? Or just Mappoint?

Streets and Trips is not licensed for use with StreetDeck and will not work. Mappoint 2006 uses similar, but more up to date data then S&T 2006.

Mappoint issue with vista on asus r2hv
I get the same error " navagation failed to initialize, is the navigation data installed". it goes to a blank screen then. I do ctrl+alt+delete and get to task manager and Mappoint is runing, but throws an error that files are not registered corrrectly and then I get the SD error report screen.
I'M Running Vista Home Premium with latest update of streetdeck and mappoint 2006.
Troubleshooting steps taken:
+tried registering MappointAddin.dll
+reinstalled Street deck and mappoint from SD DVD and also tried from a Registered copy of mappoint that i own. (about a dozen times in different orders). what is strange is that it sees the mappoint on the SD dvd as a different version than my registered copy of mappoint 2006.
+ran mappoint check tool and everything looked ok. Still no navigation data
+re-installed Vista os and all drivers for a fresh start.
+installed SD and Mappoint from DVD, same issue.
+Set all program files to use XP compatability mode, Running as Admin
+Mappoint will run by itself when launched from start menu, but will not launch from SD navigation button. Throws same error as above.
+installing XP SP2 now to see if it's OS related. (it works great with XP)
Any help getting this to work with Vista would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Brandon

Please post your StreetDeck logs and the output of the mappoint check tool.
