Here 's a solution:

you can browse the map while you have internet access.. and that will download the images it takes a lil bit of time but it works...

Data card is pricey per month, but its only 20 bucks more per month then having data service on a 3g or verizon phone.

Downloading the map while browsing does work, but you also need to zoom in and out to get all the images, unless you set your nav to never zoom for turns.

you could also borrow somebody's phone and drive all over your city.. OR you can move to a city that has WIFI everywhere....

or you could live without it
