I am going to try to engage Microsoft to get an answer to this question. This is the final component in my install and I need it to work. I did find something interesting tonight though. as I was driving along I tried to go into the settings menu, and it stopped me saying that this feature was not available while driving then gave me a driving speed. so the gps is functioning correctly. and street deck is getting the data of my travel speed. so my question is, is this part of mappoint or something built into streetdeck? it might be helpful knowledge to have when contacting M$.

-TT

p.s. the error message I am recieving is a bit different, it sounds that we have similiar problems and the same solution might work but just as a heads up my issue is as follows:

/edit actually after looking in the log we have the exact same problem:

Code:
INFO: CUVAppData::OnCreate - Navigation controller successfully initialized! WARNING: CNAVController::InitializeMappoint_Help - NewMap - MapPoint North America can't run because it is not registered on your system, or it can't be found. Install MapPoint North America and try again. WARNING: CNAVController::InitializeMappoint_Help - NewMap (Europe) - MapPoint Europe can't run because it is not registered on your system, or it can't be found. Install MapPoint Europe and try again.

I install the software from the ST DVD and everything goes fine on the install. then I fire up SD and when I click on navigation it says. "Failed to initialize navigation, is the navigation software installed" or something to that effect. Then if click start -> programs-> and look in there microsoft mappoint is not listed (not sure if it should be) but if I go to add/remove programs it is listed there.

no love from M$... again I am incredibly unimpressed with their knowledge base. So it looks like we are on our own.

Just as a first step can someone with a working copy for SD and mappoint working post a bit of their registry? the key I am looking for is from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MapPoint

heres what an export of mine looks like. I just want to see if there are any differences.

Code:

I had similar issues before, when i did my install. Mappoint was not registering properly because i had stop some services that i though i didn't need running, trying to optimized my system to the best performance. after i changed those settings back to the deffault. the nav worked perfect.

I don't suppose you remember what that service was? I am willing to try anything at this point.

From TabletTech's post it appears that Program Files\Streetdeck\Maps is the correct default path so my previous suggestion is probably useless.

Another possibility is that the MapPoint registry keys were created with another user's logon credentials than is currently being used. This could happen if you installed SD or Streets & Trips with one account and now use another to logon.

MapPoint.exe used to have a /regserver command line option to add the current user credentials. I don't know if this is still in MP '04/'06 but worth a try.

Try running \Program Files\Streetdeck\Map\mappoint.exe /regserver from a command prompt or the Run option in the Start menu.

If that doesn't work, another possibility is that the .Net runtime environment is incorrect. This might explain why MapPoint can be run from the cmd line as a standalone but SD errors out trying to access it.

If this is the case you could try uninstalling SD and the .Net Framework, reboot and check the registry for the Software\Microsoft\MapPoint key. If it's there delete it entirely, and reboot. Delete the SD directory trees in Program Files and My Documents, and reinstall .Net Framework again and then SD.

Here's what my reg key looks like (sorry about the formatting - I exported to a .txt file). I installed the full MP '06 on top of a Lite version so the paths are a bit different. The one difference I notice right off is the RegOwner string = StreetDeck.

Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MapPoint\13. 0\USA

... Also what's with the double whacks (\\Program Files\\Streetdeck etc.)?

Is this an artifact of the registry export or do the paths appear that way in Regedit?

When in regedit if you do an export then open it in notepad thats just what it looks like.

ok it looks like we have some differences in our registries. ie.

mine "DataPath"="D:\\MSMap\\PFiles\\MSMap\\Data"

Yours

Value 0
Name: DataPath
Type: REG_SZ
Data: xxx

mine "ConstructionFilePath"="C:\\Program Files\\StreetDeck\\Maps\\Data"

Yours
Value 3
Name: ConstructionFilePath
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\Program Files\Microsoft MapPoint\Data

Mine "InstallTo"="C:\\Program Files\\StreetDeck\\Maps\\"

Yours
Value 2
Name: InstallTo
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\Program Files\Microsoft MapPoint\

So my question is did you install mappoint previsouly or did it come right off the install disc? and why when I look in program files is there no mappoint listed there?

Going to reinstall .net framework and see if theres a diference.

I installed MapPoint first then SD Lite.

I don't think a Start Menu shortcut gets added when SD installs the MapPoint components that come with the full version.

so redid .net and reinstalled everything and still not working. I then look at look at the registry entries and saw that the contsruct path was going to the data folder in the maps directory so I dumped the mappoint.exe file in there and still no luck.

is the mappoint.exe file necessary? just curious as it was no put anywhere on the pc during the install.

Hope I can help here. I've experienced this problem myself and after much googling, found that there are some registry keys that you you don't have rights to. Unfortunately, I cannot find that post again.
In this post http://www.eggheadcafe.com/forumarch...st23840065.asp
it looks like HKCR\.ptm might be it. You can run RegMon by Sysinternals as also mentioned in the post. It might help you track it down.

Good luck.

I had this problem when I was in Switzerland.

Here is what I did, because a system restore was not an option:

Uninstalled Streetdeck, mappoint, Streets and trips.
Deleted all related folders on the hard drive
Did a registry search for streetdeck and mappoint and deleted all of those entries

Reinstalled from the DVD, and that worked. Mappoint has some weird issues from time to time.
