BUG GPS Errors EVERYTIME after resume.... PLEASE Help me resolve this

I had 2 issues and resolve one... now I am down to one, and I could have the perfect system. So please please please SD peeps, could you help me with this?

Every time I resume from standby I get the error message.

"GPS Read Error-
There was error trying to read data from the GPS. Has the device been disconnected?"

After clicking OK on that error I am able to go into the navigation setting the GPSSim.txt file is being used. I click detect, it will auto detect the GPS device just fine.

I am using the Prolific USB device. In the settings its is listed as "4-Prolific USB to Serial COMM Port (COM4)

==================================================

What have I done to troubleshoot you ask....
  • I have reinstalling the driver many times. If I change ports SD still looks for COM port 4 and I get a different message from above.
  • I have also tried using the Decon disable and enable exe files that I have created. Here are the command I created in the exe files. (Both exe files work fine disabing and enabling the device in device mgr)
Quote:
#include <Process.au3>
$rc=_RunDOS("c:\devcon enable *pid_2303*")

I created one for disable and placed it into the "Exit" folder (There is no "Sleep" folder like explained in the FAQ...Does this need to be created?)

I created a second one for enable and place it into the resume folder. After doing that.... SD crashed and would never load. I have to remove the exe files from these folders to get SD to work again.

ANY suggestions would be grateful. Love the software keep up the great work SD!!

BTW.... I wanted to put up my log file... but the only thing logged was my install. The modify date has not changed since then.

First of all, I refuse to be lumped in with the marshamallow chickens!

Prolific is just the serial-to-USB chip/driver. I bet you have a GlobalSat BU353, but it would help to know what make/model you have.

Also is the GPS being connected directly to the motherboard or to a USB hub?
If it's a USB hub, is it a powered USB hub?
If it's a powered hub, how is it being powered?
If it's directly to the motherboard, is it a hardwired USB port or connected to headers via a ribbon cable?
Are you using a USB extension?

Am I having a blonde moment? I dont get it.....

I guess I have the USGlobalSat BU-353, I bought it from the MP3 store.

Its going through a 4 port usb hub. It is NOT a powered hub.

Are you using a USB extension?
From the USP port on the back of the computer I have a USB extention to the USB hub, the GPS is plugged directly into the hub. (I dont think there is an extension between the GPS and HUB, almost positive)

Does the problem happen if you plug the gps directly into the motherboard? There are problems with this sort of thing when using the touchscreen through a hub as well. After standby, the touchscreen is not recognized.

Have you checked the USB device power settings? Go to device manager and then go to the properties of every usb hub/root and look for the powe rsettings tab. Look for things like "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" and that sort of thing.

I had the same problem. this happened because i had the gps (same mentioned above) connected to a usb hub. I removed it from the hub, connected directly to the motherboard and problem solved. never have anymore issues with it again

Peeps = marshmallow chickens, of which I am not one.

It should be on a label on the back/bottom of the unit. But the only model they sell is the BU353, so that ends that mystery.

I'd try a powered hub. That's possibly the cause of your problem, although not a guarantee.
As others have suggested, plug your GPS reciever directly to the motherboard. That's how I have mine connected and have yet to see an issue with it, although I'm using hibernation, not standby.

Hibernate is your friend if you are forced to plug the gps into your hub. I had the same issue in standby but it works fine if i hibernate the system, even with an extension lead and the gps plugged into the hub

How are you guys using Hibernation instead of Standby? Hibernation is not an option in SD.

I am going to try and hook it up to the mobo and see if that helps. The only reason I have not done that is because my rear window is tented really dark and it will not read throught the window.

Do you have hibernation enabled in the Windoze Power Options control panel?

As they mentioned, hibernation must be enabled in XP for it to be an option in SD. Now, if hibernation is not enabled in your copy of XP, then you need to do some digging...every device driver for all of the devices installed on your system must support hibernation for it to show up as an option. Make sure all of your drivers are up to date in device manager.

The hibernation option disappeared for me after I connected a DVD drive (but didn't install the correct driver for it, allowing XP to see it as a generic CD ROM). Disabling the device allowed the computer to hibernate, as did installing the correct driver. Took a few reboots to really work consistently, though.

Good luck.
